The Begining
May 1948 the word Apartheid was being used in the governments choics in South Africa. Apartheid meaning the seperation, the way they were using it the seperation of race. -
Peaceful Rebels
Volenteers begin peacefully breaking laws they think are dumb, like staying up and out of ther houses after hours, sitting on white benches, and other things that they thought were wrong. -
Bantu Education
They have now created a seperate learning system for blacks, and whites. They are trained to be workers since they are not thought to be anything else. -
Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela is arrested for treason. He was a strong apartheid protester. He was arested with many more people. Then after a four year trial they found him not guilty. -
Separate Homes For Blacks
They have created a new law to make new homes in a seperate location just for blacks. The new homes are called Bantustans. They do not want the blacks to be part of the county and more. -
Sharpeville Massacre
This apartheid in Africa requiers blacks to carry passbooks. This book contains lots of personal info, this is so they can idenify them. So when many protesters show up to a POLICE STATION without any passbooks a huge riot breaks out and 69 were killed. -
Nelson Mandela Again
Nelson Mandela is arrested for treason, again. He was arrested this time for his part in bombing the government and sentenced to life in prison. -
Olymipics
The 1960s Olymipics. Africa is kicked out of the olymipics games. -
Rhodesia Gains Independence
Rhodesia illegally gains independence from Great Britain. Great Britain said they would grant independence if blacks were in the government. -
Assassinated
The Prime Minister was assassinatied. "He had survived an assassination attempt in the past but finaly died to this one R.I.P Hendrik Verwoerd." (Alix W) -
South Africa Is Expelled
South Africa is expelled from the U.N (United Nations) because of the apartheid going on they were removed. They were not allowed into the U.N again until apartheid is done. -
600 Students Killed
There were 600 Students Killed in a massacre in Soweto. High school student started to rebel to get better learning for blacks. It broken up by tear gas and bullets 600 died. -
Steve Bilko is Killed
Steve was one of the helpers in the riot in Soweto. He was arrested and then died from brain damage. Most likely from police beatings. -
REVOLT
A revolt lasting from 1984 to 1989. Puts them into a state of emergincy. -
Musicians Against Apartheid
Musician Steven Van Zandt creates Artists United Against Apartheid after touring South Africa. The album "Sun City" comes out on Dec 7. -
Paul Simon releases the album "Graceland."
The album Graceland is released. Paul travels to Africa to make a song/album. In his album he talkes about how apartheid is bad and what they are doing is wrong. -
President Frederik ends the ban on the ANC
Even though he used to suport segregation, he lifted the ban and thanked Nelson Mandela for helping him end apartheid. -
Nelson Mandela is released from prison
Nelson Mandela is released from prison. After a long 27 years in prison with the help of presedent Klerk he was relesed. -
Mandela Becomes Presedent
In The countries first election that whites and blacks could vote in Mandela won. -
Nelson Mandela Dies
He Died he lived for 95 years 1918-2013
