AMS Timeline Linda Aaquist By lindaaaquist Aug 31, 1870 Maria Montessori is born. 1913 Dr. Montessori visited and toured the United States and lectured on her theories. 1920 Montessori movement in the United States stops. 1953 Nancy Rambusch met Mario Montessori. 1956 Nancy opened a Montessori School In Greenwich, CT. 1958 Nancy opened the Whitby School, the first Montessori School in the US 1959 Mario Montessori appointed Nancy Rambusch to serve as the US representative of AMI. 1960 AMS founded by Nancy McCormick Rambusch. 1961 A TIME magazine article featured Nancy, the Whitby School, and American Montessori revival. 1962 First AMS Teacher Training Course. 1963 AMI withdraws its recognition of AMS because of philosophical differences. 1963 Cleo Monson hired as Executive Secretary to reorganize AMS. 1963 The AMS National Office moves to New York City from Greenwich. 1970 Public Montessori schools started in a few places. 1970 AMS associates with Comite Hispano Montessori for Spanish Montessori Education in the Americas and the Caribbean. 1973 Cleo Monson became first National Director of AMS. 1979 First AMS International Symposium in Athens. 1994 Nancy Rambusch passed away. 1995 MACTE founded as an organization to oversee all Montessori Training Programs. 2012 National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector founded by AMS to assist Public Montessori Schools. 2013 AMS and AMI/USA form Montessori Public Policy Initiative for Montessori Early Childhood Education in schools.
