    When At-mun finally arrives at his destination, the auction, he is sold to Caleb Copeland. Then brought to his new home. The Copelands were against slavery so At-mun would have a good environment. At-mun would work there for 15 years.

    After 15 years, Caleb died and everyone is devastated. Since Caleb died, Amos had to be sold at the auction.

    When Amos is sent to the auction, Ichabod Richardson buys Amos at the auction. Ichabod is also against slavery, so no severe punishment would be made.

Amos hired two of Lois's sons to work at his tannery and bought Polly, Lois's daughter, at the auction. Polly was weak and always seemed to stare off in space. Amos bought her for a year, but she died within a little less than a year.

    Lydia lasted a full year before dying. Amos loved her dearly, but since she died free, he felt peace in his heart.

    Violet was strong and young, so she would live much longer than Amos's other two wives. First Amos would have to travel to Keene so he could pick her up.

    Whenever Amos, Violet, and Celyndia got to Jaffrey, the constable there just thought that Amos was just passing through the town but soon realized that they weren't. Amos walked up to the constable and asked if the town needed a tannery. The constable said that the town didn't have any good tanners nearby but the town won't help with any money issues, and would be warned out of town.

    Amos was really mad that the money was hidden, so he decides to sleep on mount Monadnock. When morning came, Amos was awakened by something, then he hears a loud roar, he knew that he should not help Lois.

    Lois Burdoo was a lady in the town that was very poor and Amos, being the nice man that he was, decided that he would give all of his money to her. Violet heard this and did not want him to do that, so she hid the iron kettle in the woods.

    Amos was losing his strength and felt that it was time to write his will. He goes to the deacon and donates 100 pounds to the church, and the rest of the money that he brought, to the school. He dies soon after he writes his will.
