    Nurse Clara Barton founds the Red Cross, providing peacetime/wartime assistance during the civil war. She worked for 10 years to establish the foundation in the US. Twelve nations used the Red Cross consept outlined in the Geneva Treaty, but the U.S. did not. Nurse Clara introduced it to the U.S. to include assisting during national disasters.

    Anna Jarvis worked hard starting in 1905 to honor her mother and all mothers. It was her mothers wish for all mothers to be celebrated. In 1907 she celebrated in her own town of Philadelphia. By 1909 forty-five states including Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico observed the day. Red and White Carnations were worn because Anna's Mother's favorate flower was a carnation. White (her mom's favorit color) signifing a mothers purity of heart. A white carnation was to be worn to honor deceased.

She said, “it was like an illumination…there was only one thing to be done…I resolved that women should have knowledge of contraception". They have every right to know about their own bodies.” Later she founded the American Birth Control League, turning into Planned Parenthood in 1921.

She was also the first director of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), and the first woman to receive the U.S. Army Distinguished Service Medal. She managed one of the worlds best reaserch centers for children harelips, and blue babies ( babies who are born with cyanotic heart defects).

    Rosa Parks, after shoping in Montgomery, Alabama refuses to give up her seat on a bus. Parks had many heavy bags. She borded the bus and sat at the front. When a white passenger borded the bus, she refused to move to the back. She was later arrested for her defiance. This was the turning point for the civil-rights movement. Parks was an activist with the National Association for the Advenacement of Colored People (NAACP).

    Margaret Chase Smith, was the first woman nominated for president for the United States in San Francisco at the Republican National Convention. She refused to withdraw and came in second to Senator Barry Goldwater.
