  • Enlightenment

    Enlightenment

    Enlightenment, referred to by some as The American Enlightenment, was a period philosophical fever in the thirteen colonies. Eventually, it would lead to the American Revolution.
  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War

    The war caused Great Britain to gain more land in North America. It would lead to the American Resolution, eventually.
  • Stamp Act of 1765

    Stamp Act of 1765

    This act required for the Colonist to pay tax. It was represented by a stamp, on many documents and even playing cards. Basically, any paper the Colonists used was taxed.
  • Sons of Liberty

    Sons of Liberty

    The Sons of Liberty were groups of American colonists. They didn't agree with the British rule of the 13 colonies. They helped lead the colonies to the American Revolution.
  • Townshend Act of 1767

    Townshend Act of 1767

    To help pay expenses in relation to the American colonies, Parliament passed the Townshend Act. This put taxes on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. In response, the colonies began to discourage imports of the British.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party

    A political protest that happened in Boston after the British started "taxation without representation." The Americans dumped almost 350 chests of tea into the harbor.
  • First Continental Congress Meeting

    First Continental Congress Meeting

    The first Continental Congress meeting lead the colonies to boycotting British goods, if Parliament didn't cancel the Interrogable Acts. If they refused, they would begin boycotting December 1st of 1774.

    This was the first battle of the Revolutionary War. It was fought in Massachusetts. It encouraged many Americans to support the cause of independence.

    The meeting happened inside Independence Hall. Congress began to prepare for war.

    Battle of Bunker Hill

    The Battle was fought between the United Kingdom and the Colonist. The British won, despite having more more casualties than the retreating side.
  • Olive Branch Petition Sent to England

    Olive Branch Petition Sent to England

    The Olive Branch Petition was sent to England as a final attempt to prevent formal war. It did not work as King George III refused to read it. The purpose was to remain in peace but, as it was ignored, the war grew closer to starting.
  • Thomas Paine's Common Sense is Published

    Thomas Paine's Common Sense is Published

    Thomas Paine originally published the pamphlet anonymously. It became popular quickly, selling 120,000 in the first three months. Two main points from Common Sense included independence from England and the creation of a democratic republic.
  • Articles of Confederation Created

    Articles of Confederation Created

    Adopted by the Continental Congress, it's purpose was to create a government with enough power to act by itself. It's three main purposes were;
    1) Creates the national Government of a legislative, an executive, and judicial branch
    2) Divide the power between the federal government and the states.
    3) Protect individual liberties of Americans

    The Great Compromise's purpose was to establish the United States government as a "two-house law-making body." In their House of Representatives, the number from each state was determined by population.
  • Bill of Rights Adopted

    Bill of Rights Adopted

    The Bill of Rights was a document of the first 10 amendments to the U.S constitution. It outlines the rights and limitations of the Government.
