  • Treaty of Paris

    The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War. Britain gained all of the land east of the Mississippi River.

  • Stamp Act

    New tax imposed upon American colonies by Britain to increase profit. British empire was looking for ways to make more money because of its increasing size (i.e. land gained from Treaty of Paris)
  • Townshend Acts

    Acts passed by British Parliament to further tax goods in the colonies such as glass, lead, and tea. Colonists outraged, leads to boycott of goods
  • Boston Massacre

    British forces occupying Boston were met with a mob, 5 civilians shot and killed
  • Boston Tea Party

    In protest to both taxation without representation and the monopoly of the East India Company citizens of Boston disguised themselves and snuck aboard British ships. They dumped thousands of dollars worth of tea into the Boston Harbor
  • Coercive Acts

    Consists of the Boston Port Act, Massachusetts Government Act, Administration of Justice Act, and Quartering Act. The acts closed the Boston Port, banned town meetings, and put British officials in local government
  • First Continental Congress meets

    Created in response to the Intolerable or Coercive Acts, 56 delegates represent all colonies except Georgia.
  • Patrick Henry's Speech

    Patrick Henry gives famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech to Virginia militia.
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

    Paul Revere rode from Charlestown to Lexington to warn them that the British were coming. 700 British soldiers met by 77 minutemen at Lexington. Same soldiers soon met by hundreds of minutemen. 273 British died and more than 90 Americans
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Fought at Breed's Hill, Americans lost the battle but cost the British about 40% of their forces. The Battle of Bunker Hill was a moral victory for the Americans.
  • Declaration of Independence adopted

    On July 2nd congress voted for independence; adopted the declaration of Independence on July 4th. July 4th is now annually celebrated as "Independence Day" in the United States
  • Washington Crosses the Delaware

    After being forced to abandon New York City George Washington crossed the icy Delaware River on Christmas and led a stealth attack on the British.
  • Articles of Confederation Ratified

    The Articles of Confederation were a bridge government between the Continental Congress and the U.S. Constitution
  • Battle at Yorktown

    Lord Cornwallis set up a British base in Yorktown. Washington's army combined with French forces attacked the British base at Yorktown and forced a surrender.
  • The Treaty of Paris Ends War

    After British defeat at Yorktown land battles were essentially discontinued, but fighting at sea still occurred. Fighting ends with Treaty of Paris that states that Britain recognizes the United States as an independent country and sets boundaries.
