  • Battle of Kip’s Bay

    Battle of Kip’s Bay

    On the morning of September 15, British General William Howe attacked the vulnerable American center before they completed their evacuation. Five British warships sailed into the East River and anchored two hundred yards offshore from Kip's Bay, between modern-day East Thirty-Second and Thirty-Eighth Streets.
    About fifty American soldiers were killed during the fighting, some after they surrendered, and 367 were captured. Howe suffered only a handful of casualties.

    Set up a central government with a 1 house legislature: Each state had one vote.
    Congress had authority to make war, and settle interstate disputes:
    Had very little power to enforce new laws.
    Could not coin money or levy taxes.
    Could not regulate trade.
    Very strong, independent state governments were formed.
    Very weak, central government was also created.
    Led to very weak unstable government and economy.
