    From the beginning the U.S. has always thought Hawaii was important. They had a high supply of sugar planters that sold to the U.S. Cry for annexation. US agreed to import Hawaiian sugar duty free.

    The US ordered the U.S.S. Maine to cuba to bring hime American citizens in danger from the fighting and to protect American property. On Feb. 15, 1898 the U.S.S. Maine blew up leaving 260 american men dead.

    On April 9 the Spanish agrees to what the US demanded. On April 20 the US declares war on Spain. The American fleet in the pacific steamed to the Philippines. American took open fire which gave them victory and allowed them to land in the philippines. The spanish surrenders. Next war in the Caribbean lead by the rough riders. A volunteer cavalry under command of Theodore Roosevelt. Finally on July 25 the US invaded Puerto Rico.

    Puerto Rico under the control of the US would be controlled by the military until congress decided otherwise. In 1900 foraker act which ended military rule and set up a civil government. In 1901 the insular cases, the US supreme court rules that the constitution did not automatically apply to people in acquired territories.

    Outcome: The US and Spain signed an armistice, a cease fire agreement on August 12. On december 10, 1898 the US and spain met in Paris to agree on the treaty.The treaty created problems in the US because some thought the treaty violated the declaration of independence. In the end the US has an empire that included Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.

After the war the U.S.president would appoint a governor, who would then appoint the upper house of the legislature. Filipinos would elect the lower house.Then the philippines became independent and July 4, 1946.

The chinese were attacked by the boxers which killed thousands of chinese people.To protect american rights John Hays called a 2nd series open door notes where the US states "safeguard for the world the principle of equal and impartial trade with all parts of chinese empire."

    US wanted canal that cut across central america. The US got permission from Columbia who ruled Panama. On Nov. 3, 1903 a dozen U.S. warships were present at Panama. They signed the treaty 15 day later. The US had to pay 10 million and an annual rent of 250,000. They payment began in 1931.

The successful efforts in negotiating the Treaty of Portsmouth won Roosevelt the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize. The US and Japanese interests expanded in East Asia, the two nations continued diplomatic talks. They pledged to respect each other’s possessions and

Mexicans rebelled under leadership of Francisco "Pancho" Villa and Emiliano Zapata. Eventually both sides backed down and adopted constitution that gave the government control of the nations oil.
