    Upton Sinclair was a Muckraker who sought out the flaws in the workplace in order to bring change. After The Jungle was published, many people realized how horrible workplaces were, and also how hard it was for immigrants to live during this time period.
  • The Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act are Passed

    The Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act are Passed
    The Meat Inspection Act was an act that prohibited misbranded meat and meat processed in unsanitary conditions to be sold. The Pure Food and Drug Act protected people against adulterated food. With these two acts, it was now safer to eat food.

    Muller v. Oregon
    Muller v. Oregon was a court case that was over long working hours for women. By law, women were only allowed to work at most 10 hours, but a woman's job at Muller Laundry required her to work more than the limit. The court decided that it was unsafe for a woman's health to have to work that long.

    Zimmermann Telegram
    The Zimmermann Telegram was one of the many causes that pulled the United States into World War II. The telegram was a message from Germany to Mexico saying that if Mexico helped Germany with the war, Germany would give Mexico back land the United States had, such as New Mexico.

    Woodrow Wilson's 14 Points was a series of goals and ideas that he hoped to see for not only the United States, but also for the rest of the world, to obtain peace. He later incorporated his points into the forming of the League of Nations.

    The League of Nations was an idea that President Woodrow Wilson created to prevent wars such as World War I from happening again. However, the United States decided not to join, as The League of Nations was straying away from what Woodrow Wilson had originally percieved.

    Black Tuesday marks the start of The Great Depression, when the stock market collapsed. This started many years of poverty for most of the United States.
  • Roosevelt's Inaugural Address

    "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Roosevelt speaks in his Inaugural address about how he plans to help the country out of the Depression, starting his New Deal plans.
  • Formation of the Civillian Conservation Corps

    The CCC was a group formed from the New Deal that did public service. This helped many Americans regain jobs from when they lost them during the Great Depression.
  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, destroying numerous ships. This upset America as it was an attack on their own soil, and it pulled American into World War II.
  • Bombing of Hiroshima

    The United States tried to end the war by bombing Hiroshima. Many innocent Japanese civilians were killed, and this led to the initial surrender of the Japanese.
  • Japan Surrenders

    Injured from the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagisaki, Japan finally surrenders to the United States. This ends World War II.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education was a court case that combined numerous different cases together, with the overall idea of that African American children had poorer schooling than white children. The court ended up ruling for the African Americans.
  • Little Rock Nine

    The Little Rock Nine was an attempt at integrating an all-white school. Nine students went through hate and other difficulties when trying to attend school.
  • Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" Speech

    MLK's "I have a Dream" speech is considered a major milestone for the African-American Civil Rights Movement. This speech was precursored by the March on Washington.

    The Berlin Wall was a wall that divided Europe, letting no one inside Berlin. The fall of the wall was a symbolic way to end the Cold War, and it precursed the fall of the Soviet Union.

    The warsaw pact was a military alliance of multiple communist nations. With the dissolution of the pact, many Americans could feel safe from the threat of communism.
