  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    Confederates under Gen Pierre Beauregard opened fire with 50 cannons upon Sumter in Charleston, SC after a Union supply ship was announced to resupply men there. This began the Civil War and made the South look like the aggressor.
  • First Bull Run/ Manassas

    Union Army under Gen McDowell suffers defeat at Bull Run. Confederate Gen Jackson earns the name "Stonewall" since he defended against the Union attack. Union falls back to WA and Lincoln said it was bad. Union realizes war will be more difficult.
  • Monitor vs VA

    Naval Battle, Confederate ironclad Marymack sinks 2 wooden Union ships, then battles the Union ironclad "Monitor" to a draw. This changed naval warfare since wooden ships became obsolete.

    Battle of Shiloh

    Confederate surprise attack on Gen US Grant at Shiloh on TN River. Results in a bitter struggle, which results in more casualties than all previous American wars combined. The president is pressured to relieve Grant but doesn't.

    Seven Days Battle

    Gen Lee attacks McClellan near Richmond, resulting in heavy losses for both armies. McClellan withdraws to WA. The Confederates repulsed the Union attempt to capture Richmond.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Bloodiest day in US history as Gen Lee and the confederates are stopped by McClellan. 26,000 casualties by nightfall, and Lee withdraws to VA. Major battle as it cleared way for the union to progress further south.
  • Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation

    Lincoln warned Southern states that he will free all slaves if the other states would not join the Union by january 1st, 1863.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    Gen Burnside suffers a costly defeat in VA after many attacks on entrenched Rebels. Confederates lose significantly less, they lost almost half as many men as the Union.
  • Final Emancipation Proclamation

    Freed all slaves in Confederate lands and emphasized the enlisting of black soldiers in the army. Effectively isolates the south internationally, as the other european nations have banned slaves.

    Battle of Chancellorsville

    The unon army under Gen. Hooker is defeated by Gen. Lee's much smaller forces. Gen. Stonewall Jackson is killed by his own people. Then Hooker retreats. Hooker "I just lost confidence in Joe Hooker.

    Confederates defeated in Pennsylvania, tide of war changes to favor the Union. Confederates lost a lot of soldiers, and lee had to retreat back to virginia and the union also lost a lot of men, and this lead to president lincoln gettysburg address.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    The last confederate stronghold on the mississippi surrenders to Gen. Grant, After a six week seige. The union effectively splits the confederacy in two.
  • Gettyburg Address

    Lincoln delivers an address making the battlefield a national cemetery. This speech strengthened and enforced the belief in human equality and redefined the Civil War as a struggle for equality, not just the Union.

    Battle of Chattanooga

    The rebels seige ends as union forces under Gen. Grant defeats Gen. Bragg. They defeated the rebels from what they thought was a impenetrable position.

    Wilderness Campaign

    Massive Union Campaign, Grant with 120,000 soldiers advances towards richmond to engage Lee's army. The little clashes slowly dwindled their supplies and Lee left the onfederate capital behind and this led to his surrender at appomattox
  • Battle of Atlanta.

    Gen. Sherman captures Atlanta. The confederate guy said " we need to stop sherman right now", there happened to be another union troop located right near there, instead f the conferate plan failed and then Sherman was able to secure his foothold on Atlanta.
  • Appomattox

    Lee surrenders to Grant at the Appomattox courthouse in VA. This was the beginning of a series of surrenders and the beginning of the end of the Civil War.
