The Zimmermann Telegram was a telegram sent from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to a German Minister in Mexico asking for their companionship in WWI to join them in arms for land in America in return. Great Britain intercepted this message and deciphered it, therefore figuring out Germany’s plan and letting America know, causing them to in turn join the war helping the allies. If the Telegram was never intercepted the war might have gone a completely different way.

The first major world war was fought between the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey) and the Allied Powers (France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, from 1917, the United States.). This war was fought on foreign land on almost every side and was known internationally as something that was happening worldwide and was dangerous.

The assassination of Franz Ferdinand is widely speculated to be upsetting and overall caused WWI. America's involvement in WWI was partly because of the bombings of American boats by the Germans. In this case, America became involved with the war because of the physical violence whereas, in cold wars such as Vietnam, America joined because of political reasons. Think of a cold war as a cold shoulder. These differences are what differ the Cold Wars from the hot wars.

This period of time and the wars that took place in this period were known as the 'Hot' wars. These wars were international and large scale with the chance of a major change in history for the entire planet. America's involvement in these conflicts also changed the course of both wars, as their help against the Axis was very important for how the wars ended up. In a Hot war, you use your army to fight. In Cold Wars there are no physical battles but instead tension between nations.

Germany's attack on American supply boats was an obvious conflict that was another factor in America's overall unwanted involvement in WW1.

WWII was the second international conflict between the Axis, (Italy, Germany, and Japan) and the Allies (Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and later America). The war started after the Nazi invasion of Poland and truly ended after the surrender of Japan after the events of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The main enemy during WWII was the Nazis, who were led by the dictator and President of Germany, Adolf Hitler. This war was the biggest and deadliest war in history, involving more than 30 countries.

The Nazi invasion of Poland created a worldwide commotion causing WWII. The 'justification' was the accusation of Poland, claiming that the country was persecuting ethnic Germans living there. Along with this claim, Germany also said that Poland was planning on dismembering the country which was a false statement.

The German attack on Great Britain left the world at risk of the Nazis having total control of Europe. Obviously, America wanted to prevent this from happening to avoid Germany winning the war. If the Germans had gained control of the country the war could've gone extremely different as it would give the Germans a front in Great Britain thus giving them a devastating advantage against the rest of Europe and the world. This conflict would lead to America's speculation in the possible war effort.

Pearl Harbor was by far the biggest reason America joined WWII in the first place, and thus, technically, changing the course of the war. The attack was led by Japan, whose intention was to cut off America's access to Japan's coastline through Hawaii and prevent American attacks. While America was neutral in the war before the attack, this action caused them to join the war the very next day.

The Cold War period was a period of time soon after WWII that consisted of more wars, but not to the scale that was seen in the earlier years. The Cold Wars differ from the 'Hot' wars because most of them were fought internally inside of countries and did not go to an extremely wide scale like the world wars, and others weren't even fought physically. Along with that, America's involvement in the Cold Wars was not physical attacks but rather started because of political conflict.

NATO was an alliance created between 30 different countries that were formed after WWII for the purpose of keeping security on the Soviet Union as communism and the Soviets overall were kept monitored because of their potential to be dangerous. A common theme throughout both the Hot Wars and the Cold Wars was that many different alliances were made all for different purposes.

Vietnam was another war that was fought during the cold war period, but unlike the Cuban Missile Crisis, this war was in fact fought physically. The reason this war could be classified as a "cold war" is that it was not fought nationally but purely inside the country of Vietnam. America was involved in this war because they didn't want communism to spread throughout all of Vietnam and spread to the rest of Asia.

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day period of political and social stress throughout the USA because of the information that Russia had acquired the nuclear bomb. This war wasn't fought physically but rather politically, as Russia was preparing on using nuclear bombs on American cities. This war caused panic throughout the entire country, this makes the cold war similar to the hot wars as panic and anxiety were prominent during both, however, not a single troop was sent on either side.
