Hayes, the Republican, was given the White House if he would remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida and Louisiana.

    On July 7th, Hawaii was annexed into America. Due to the break out of the Spanish-American War, and use of the naval base at Pearl Harbor, it helped to convince Congress to approve annexation. Hawaii was the 50th state in the United States.
