The Great Compromise of 77
On March 2nd, an informal agreement with allies of the Republicans and southern democrats helped to fix the 1876 presidential election. This was the end of the Reconstruction era. Rutherford B. Hayes, the Republican, was given the White House if he would remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida and Louisiana. -

On the morning of October 22nd, Thomas Edison, inventor of the light bulb, finally made the ideal incandescent light bulb. Mr. Edison was an American businessman and inventor. It helped people to be able to work during the night. It also made it safer to travel in the dark. -
The Chinese Exclusion Act
On May 6, this act was approved. This law was the first law that stopped immigration into America. It was passed by Congress and signed by President Chester A. Arthur. It stopped immigrants who could not support themselves, who are ill and criminals from coming into America. -
The Homestead Strike
This strike is also known as the Homestead riot. The Carnegie Steel Company and its workers had a violent labor argument. This happened in Homestead, Pennsylvania. The steel company discharged workers in the Amalgamated Association and Steel Workers Union. 16 people were killed and many others were injured. -

Henry Ford revealed the “Quadricycle.” This was the first automobile Henry drove and invented. -

The United States had a new president - William Mckinley. Mr. Mckinley defeated WIlliam Bryan by winning 292 electoral votes to Bryans 155. -
Spanish-American War
The Spanish-American War started when Spain blew up the U.S.S. Maine ship, in the Havana Harbor. The war broke out because of the US support of Cuba’s independence, protect US business in Cuba, yellow journalism, and along with the sinking of the ship. This war only lasted from April 21st to December 10th, 1898. -
Hawaii Becomes Apart of the United Sates
On July 7th, Hawaii was annexed into America. Due to the break out of the Spanish-American War, and use of the naval base at Pearl Harbor, it helped to convince Congress to approve annexation. Hawaii was the 50th state in the United States.
