He did this by doing a surprise attack on British-aligned Hessian mercenaries on Christmas evening 1776. This led his team to an advantage making British General Charles Cornwallis eventually surrender in Yorktown, Virginia, sealing the defeat of the world's most powerful nation on October 1781.
