Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897. Amy Otis and her alcoholic husband had two daughters, Amelia Earhart and Muriel Earhart. Amelia was the oldest. -
Tomboy Trouble
Amelia's mother didn't approve of her being a tomboy. Her mother was very girly and she thought that girls should be girly and boys should be manly. -
High School Honor Roll
Amelia excelled in chemistry and became independent early due to her father's inability to support their family. She payed attention in school and did extremely well. -
Maybe Medical?...
After Amelia finished high school, she took a medical course at Columbia University in New York. Amelia was unsuer what to do, and while taking the couse, she cared for injured pilots. -
Aviation Graduation
Neta Snook, Amelia's instructor, was the first woman to graduate from the Curtiss School of Aviation. Amelia graduated under her instruction on Dec. 16, 1921, and received her pilot's license. -
Looknig the Part
There is not an exact date, but in 1922, Amelia Earhart spent much of her time on the airfield, and she cropped her hair short and wore a leather jacket to fit in with the other pilots. She loved flying and just couldn't get enough of it. -
Flying Solo
Amelia maade her first solo flight in 192, and set a new record. Shortly after though, her record was broken, and she tried to reclaim it, but she almost crashed because of a dense fog, -
Financial Issues
Amelia attended several different schools because of the family's financial issues, and she also conflicted when her parent's divorced in 1924. Edwin, Amelia's dad, was a drunkard and the kids were usually sent to their grandparents'. -
The Flight of Friendship
Amelia's flight across the Atlantic wasn't flown by her because she only kept records of the flight. Also, it was supposed to be a goodwill gesture towards England, called the friendship flight. It was 20 hours and 40 minutes long. -
Putnam Publicity
In 1931, Amelia Earhart married George Putnam, or GP, and he used his own great abilities as a publicist to make Amelia one of the best known personalities in America. -
Atlantic Adventure
Whenever Amelia tried to fly across the Atlantic, her wings iced up and her altimeter failed, and she amazingly landed a tailspin. Amelia was trying to set a record, but the conditions weren't good enough. -
Flying Fashion
The exact date is unknown, but in 1932, with the help of GP, she started her own clothing line to promote her pilot image. -
Final Destination
Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan took off from the ggulf without proper communication equipment. Amelia said that she didn't need the equipment, and that she would be fine. -
The Search for the Star
Around 10am, search teams began to look for Amelia, but they ran into a violent storm, the same one that Amelia was probably caught in. Before they left, Amelia wouldn't respond, and when she did, she sounded stressed and worried. -
Amelia flies on...
Amelia Earhart made an imprint that women can do anything, just like men, and we celebrate her on her birthday, July 24th. Next July, Amelia Earhart will be 116 years old.
