Amanda's Literacy Timeline

By sstein
  • The Begining

Starts Kindergarten and gets excited about reading books with large print and pictures. Enjoyed trips to the library to check out books.
  • 3rd Grade

Reads series such as Junie B. Jones every night with Mom for 20 minutes each evening. Enjoyed having moments like these with my Mom, where we could bond over stories. It was a very positive experience for me.
  • Age 10

In 5th grade I started reading more chapter books such as the Goose Bumps and The Bridge to Terabithia. I really enjoyed reading on the weekends.
  • Middle School

Reads longer chapter books like Nancy Drew. I remember having a negative experience in school because I lost interest in books required for school.
  • Freshman Year of High School

Assigned books for English that was not interesting to me so I lost interest and would skim through most of the books just to find the answers I needed for homework. Books such as, A Tale of Two Cities and Oedipus Rex. Was however interested in Beowulf.
  • High School Continued

Begins to read and completes, Twilight series. Was very hooked on these books, I stopped reading books for school all together. Assigned books such as, Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, and Animal Farm.
  • Senior Year of High School

Haven't found books to read for pleasure after I finished the Twilight series however, I did read books in school that I was able to connect with such as Night. I also enjoyed The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible.
  • Preschool

Starts working as a preschool teacher and reads books with pictures and very minimal words
  • Preschool Continued

Changes classrooms and began to work with older children and switched to longer stories with much more words. Enjoyed reading children's books again because those were the books that got me into reading in the first place. This was a very positive experience for me, it reminded me of the times I was reading books with my mom as a child.
  • Currently

Haven't read for pleasure in a long time and my interest has finally returned which is a moment I have been waiting for.
