    The first World War began when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Serbia wanted to be a seperate nation than Austria-Hungary. Germany entered the war because its allies did first, however, they stayed in the war because they became power and land hungry and fought agressively to try to gain these things. Paul Baümer was a german soldier.

    Beginning of the Book
    This is where the reader first meets Paul and he friends. They had just come back from two weeks of fighting and recieved a break. Out of 120 men, only 80 returned.
  • Visiting Kemmerich

    Visiting Kemmerich
    Paul and his friends go to visit their friend Kemmerich that had had his leg amputated and was not doing well. Paul eventually comes back and Kemmerich dies in his arms. Kemmerich had boots that Muller wants. Kemmerich ordered Paul to give Muller his boots as one of his dying wishes.

    Troops leave for the front.
    The troops leave for the front. They come under attack and take shelter in a grave yard. The soldiers sheild their bodies from shaprelding, shells, and bullets with coffins blown out of the ground, and even dead bodies.
  • Talk of the End of the War

    The soldiers hope for an end to the war after a rumor had been spread. This shows to the reader that the soldiers' lives were not solely consumed by fighting in the war. Many of the men wanted to war to end and everyone to stop fighting.
  • Bloody and Long Battle

    Bloody and Long Battle
    The soldiers fight a battle with allied soldier. The are forced to live in the trenches and fight agains rodents for the scarse amount of food. At this point in time, reinforcements were sent to help fight but many die from gas attacks and late reactions to the fight. In this battle, Paul also runs into the ill-behaved Himmelstoss. He chews him out because he acts as a coward and is afraid to fight while reinforcements are going blindly into battle.
  • Paul is on Leave

    Paul is on Leave
    Paul recieves a seventeen day leave to visit his family. Paul feels awkward about returing home. He doesn't want to lose his friends. When he returns home, he finds his mother dying from cancer. Paul must go to visit Kemmerich's mother and tell her that her son had past away. She begged to know how, but Paul wouldn't tell her.
  • Paul is Helpful at Camp

    Paul is Helpful at Camp
    Paul is sent to training camp after his leave. He doens't gain any friends at the camp and feels lonely. The camp is next to a prison for Russians. Paul sees the starving and weak men behind the fence and tries to help them by sneaking them food. He also shared with them his cigarettes. He realizes that his "enemies" are his "enemies" only because somebody with higher standing told them that they are.
  • Paul Returns

    Paul Returns
    Paul returned to the front after he had beem through the training camp. Once there, he volunteers to spy in No Man's Land. A bombardment starts and Paul gets lost on his way back. He finds a shell-hole and takes cover in it.
  • Paul Kills the French Soldier

    Paul Kills the French Soldier
    While Paul is still in the shell-hole from an on-going bombarment, a French soldier jumps into the same hole. Frightened Paul reacts quickly and stabs the soldier in order to save his own life. After doing so, Paul realizes that he must stay there with the dying man until he can leave. He bandages the wound and gives the man water. After many hours, the soldier past away. This was the first time that Paul had killed anyone in hand-to-hand combat.
  • Paul's Final Trip Home

    Paul's Final Trip Home
    During an attack, Paul inhaled poison gas and receives leave for fourten days to heal and rest. He is afraid and eager to return home, however, he believes that he will not be able to function outside of the war with little education and no career.
  • Kropp and Paul are Injured

    Kropp and Paul are Injured
    Paul and his buddy, Kropp, are injured during battle. They bribe a Major with cigars to be on the same train. After a while in the hospital, Kropp's leg was amputated and Paul was sent back to the war. Kropp was sucked into depression after his leg was amputated.

    The Last of Paul's Friends
    Detering and Kat were both killed. Kat was wounded in battle. Paul tried to carry him to safety. However, a piece of shrapnel hit Kat in the head and he died. Paul was the only one left from his class and group of friends.
  • All Quiet on the Western Front

    All Quiet on the Western Front
    Paul dies on the day that the army simply states was "All Quiet on the Western Front." He falls face first and when a soldier finds him, his face was peaceful and calm, like he was glad it was done.
