First Trenches Dug
The first trenches were dug on the Western Front. History of the Trench: -
A Christmas Gift - Truce
An "unofficial" truce happened between soldiers on the front. In battle it is a known thing that soldiers will not fight, however, the Christmas of 1914 was a little different. Not only was there no fighting but the soldiers gathered and celebrated the truce. They played football and all together forgot about their reasons for being there. -
Total War
Beginning in January, however most visible on April 22nd, 1915, the Germans used chlorine gas on their enemies -
Franz Kemmerich
Franz Kemmerich is the first of the Second Unit to die. During his time in the field hospital Paul can see death working through Kemmerich's body and quickly realizes he won't live long. Kemmerich's boots play an important role in the story they act as a symbol. He has a pair of great airmen's boots and the entire troop - especially Muller - desire the boots. Even so, they show compasion in not telling Kemmerich that at most he will ever need one of the boots. -
A Gruesome Attack
Shortly after the Second Unit returns to the front they are bombarded with endless attacks. They became stuck in a house for shelter and after days without few they became claustrophobic and extremely bored. After these consecutive attacks only 32 of the original 150 remain. -
A Return Home
Paul returns home on leave for his leg injury and spends about half a month home. Part of him hopes to return to the same home he left but two components have changed for him. He returns to his mother who now has cancer and he quickly realizes the things that made his home his "home" do not affect him anymore. He has lost his innocense and has become a soldier. -
Stanislaus Katczinsky
Kat is an extremely positive influence in the book and on the characters, he acts and portrays the qualities of a true leader. Kat is the last to die out of Paul's close friends. After his death, Paul finds less and less reasons and motivations for survival. -
