    At two weeks= size of a pin head
    Egg attaches to lining of uterus
    Critical for brain and spinal development
  • Month 2

    Month 2
    Size= about 1/4th in. at the beginning of the month
    Face, eyes, ear, and limbs begin to take shape
    Bones begin to form
  • Month 3

    Month 3
    size= about 1in.
    Nostrils, mouth, lips, and eyelids form
    Fingers & toes are almost complete
    All organs are present but still immature
  • Month 4

    Month 4
    size= about 3 in.
    Weight= 1 ounce
    can suck its thumb, swallow, hiccup, and move
    facial features become clearer
  • Month 5

    Month 5
    size= about 6.5-7in.
    weight= 4-5 ounces
    Teeth continue to develop
    Hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows appear
    becomes more active
  • Month 6

    Month 6
    size= 8-10 in.
    weight= 8-12 ounces
    fat deposits under skin, but fetus appear wrinkled
    breathing movements begin
  • Month 7

    Month 7
    size=10-12 in.
    weight=1.5-2 pounds
    periods of activeness and periods of rest
  • Month 8

    Month 8
    size=14-16 in.
    weight= 2.5-3 pounds
    rapid weight gain
    may react to loud noises
    moves to fetal position
  • Month 9

    Month 9
    size=17-18 in.
    weight= 5-6 pounds
    weight gain continues
    movement decrease because of the baby's size
    acquires disease-fighting antibodies
    descends into pelvis for BIRTH
  • Birth Defects

    Birth Defects
    Down Syndrome: genetic disorder in which there are 3 of the 21st chromosome (also called Trisomy 21)
    Congenital Heart Defect: structure heart problem that is present at birth (can usually be fixed with open heart surgery)
    Cleft Lip: when the lip has a separation from not developing correctly (corrective surgery can occur)
    Cerebral Palsy : a disorder that affect physical and cognitive functioning
    Autism: birth defect that affect mental and physical function
