Alfred North Whitehead 1861-1947

  • Born - Ramsgate, England, United Kingdom

  • Published his book "A Treatis on Universal Algebra"

He was as much a mathematician as he was a metaphysician (Epperson 105). He speaks of interpretation, comparison, and understanding, not just numbers of math. I think it is important to show Whitehead's contributions as a mathematician before his transition in his field of study. He was at Cambridge for 30 years and at the University of London for 14 years (Spencer) before coming to Harvard. These years would have shaped him into the philosopher the sciences community came to know.
  • Became Teacher of Philosophy at Harvard University

Alfred North Whitehead started working at Harvard at the age of 63 (Spencer). “In England, Whitehead was regarded as a mathematician; it was left to America to discover him as a philosopher” (27). While at Harvard he produced many major philosphilcal works that were a remarkable output for an English mathematician (Hendley). He was very enthusiastic about teaching the entire time he was at Harvard so much so In 1936 he published an article titled, “Harvard: The Future” (Hendley).
  • Published Science and the Modern World

Alfred Whitehead wrote this book about the embodiment of critical historic conceptual studies of the development of modern science, starting with the Greeks, overviewing 2500 years of struggles with in science (Weber). The discussion of the concept of God occurs thus in a totally dispassionate context, independently of religious or even ethical concerns.
