    Louisiana Purchase
    President Thomas Jefferson bought land from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. He bought it for $15 million dollars. The purchase was called Louisiana Purchase. This purchase kickstarted the move out west.
  • Indian Removal Act

    Indian Removal Act
    After the Louisiana Purchase, people started moving west and started settling out there. But, out west was Indians, Indians who controlled most of the land out west. Americans started pushing the indians out of there homes and made the move to new areas. So to help, President Andrew Jackson signed a new law to remove indians with military action.

    Cornelius vanderbilt was the creator of the New York Central railroad. He dominated most of the railroads because its size and how far it stretches. His rails would stretch from main cities to small stations all over the U.S. He was also one of the most successful monopolies because of how efficient trains were. He is worth $205 billion dollars in today's money

    A year before the first shots were fired, Abraham Lincoln was running for president. He was running against John C. Breckinridge and he was part of the Republican party. Lincoln won the election, 180 to 72 electoral votes. He then soon became the president for the Union.

    The Battle of Fort Sumter only lasted for two days and took place in Charleston, South Carolina. This battle was significant because it was the first battle of the Civil War. The confederates won the first battle of many. No deaths on either side occurred.

    After the Civil War ended, a period of rebuilding and healing was happening. The Reconstruction era was supposed to help fix and forgive the south after losing the war. The reconstruction era was ran by President Abraham Lincoln.

    Just as reconstruction got started, Lincoln was assassinated at Petersen House, in Washington, D.C. He was the one who was supposed to lead the nation in healing and fixing the nation, was now gone. He would be replaced by Andrew Johnson. He was not a very good leader.

    After fighting for about four years, the confederates general, Robert E. Lee surrendered to the union. The union was led by Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, George Mcclellan and Joshua Chamberlain. Each of those generals led the north to a victory. Finally, teh fighting between the north and the south was over. Soon, slavery would become illegal.

    John D. Rockefeller was a entrepreneur that started one of the oil companies during the 1870's. Standard Oil would produce, transport, refined, and marketed oil. The company was a huge monopoly at the time, because oil was fairly new. His company made him worth about $318.3 billion in today's money. But, shortly after, the sherman anti trust act made the Standard Oil company to dissolve.

    This act was passed by congress to eliminate a big problem in the U.S. at the time. Monopolies, monopolies were when one business dominated the industry they were in. A example of a monopoly was Rockefeller and his oil company. Or, Vanderbilt and his trains.

    Originally, there was no checking of people coming into the U.S. Boats would come and drop you off in the U.S. The ellis island was made. The island would check for illnesses, backgrounds, etc. The island was in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty. It finally opened on the first day of 1892.

    The USS Maine was a American ship that sunk in Havana's harbor. The ship was $4,677,788.75 to make. The ship sparked madness because the U.S. thought the Spaniards did it. But, they didn't, it was a problem on the ship that made it explode. The U.S found a way to put another on Spain and that angered Americans even more.

    The United States wanted more land and wanted more supplies. They wanted to take Hawaii because of its sugars and could grow other exotic fruits. The island was originally ruled by Queen Liliuokalani. She was overthrown by Sanford B. Dole in 1893. Soon after, the U.S. took the island, instead of paying

    After five months of fighting, finally the U.S. wins the war. They decided they needed to sign a treaty to end the war officially. The treaty gave back the independence to Cuba. The treaty also forced Spain to give Guam and Puerto Rico to the United States. After losing, Spain decided on fixing the problems inside the country, instead of worrying about other countries

    Angel island was identical to ellis island. It's purpose was to check immigrants coming into the U.S. The island was located in San Francisco. They put angel island on the west coast to check people from countries such as Japan and Europe. The island opened a way up to immigrants who lived closer to the west coast of the U.S.

    Before world war 1 began, Franz Ferdinand was the prince of Hungary and of Bohemia. He didn't have the greatest personality, he was usually emotionless and mean. But events changes after he was assassinated by a hitman for Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Which this event lead to the declaration of war.

    The battle of Somme was teh bloodiest battle of the war. This battle left 1,219,201 total casualties. The british suffered 57,000 deaths on the first day alone. The Allies and Central Powers would lose more than 1.5 million men. This battle was a long and gruesome battle.

    The U.S decided to get involved with the war. They joined Britain, France, and Russia. They sent over two million troops to helps bring Germany down. Many americans wanted to remain neutral, but many were for the war. The sinking of Lusitania, killed 128 Americans. Making the U.S furious, but still for awhile they remained neutral.
