Alexandre Dumas was Born in Villers-Cotterets, France
Dumas’s parents were General Thomas Alexandre Dumas and Marie-Louise Elisabeth Labouret -
Alexandre’s father died in 1806 leaving his wife a widow and Alexandre without education, his mom took the role to provide for her son which lead him to read anything that he could get his hands on which would later in life inspire home to become a writer. -
In 1822, after the restoration of the monarchy, 20-year old Alexandre moved to Paris, where he worked at the Palais Royal in the office of Louis Philippe -
While in Paris, Alexandre began writing plays for the theater, his first play was Henry lll and His Court which were produced in 1829. His next play Christine was just as popular and he was financially able to write full-time. -
On 1 February 1840 Alexandre married actress Ida Ferrier, though he was married he was not faithful which led to numerous liaisons with other women, fathering at least four illegitimate children. One of those children, a son named after him who would later end up following in Alexandre’s footsteps. -
Dumas with numerous assistance and collaborators one being Maquet who outlined the plot of The Count of Monte Cristo, and made substantial contributions to The Three Musketeers and its sequels. Maquet proposed plots and wrote drafts, while Dumas added the details, dialogues, and the final chapters. -
When Alexandre had died he was originally buried where he had been born, in 2002 French President, Jacques Chirac, had his body exhumed, after this he was transported in a solemn procession to the Pantheon of Paris, the great mausoleum where French luminaries are interred
