    The birth of a philosopher
    Alan Francis Chalmers was born in 1939, in Bristol, England.
    Over the course of many years he will research and publish many great things, including Scientific Revolution, Brownian motion, symmetry in physics, and the nature of laws in physics and more. “Knowledge about the moon's surface is not based on and derived from mountains and craters but from factual statements about mountains and craters.”

  • Beginning of his education

    Beginning of his education
    To start his education he went to the University of Bristol, where he graduated in physics in 1961. He quickly moved on to further his education by receiving a Masters in Science at the University of Manchester in 1964. For two years he taught physics and the history of science then decided to study again full-time at the University of London, where he earned his PhD on the electromagnetic theory of JC Maxwell 1971.

    Dr. Chalmers
    Upon becoming a doctor he moved to Sydney, where he attended the University of Sydney as a Postdoctoral Fellow. from there he quickly advanced to Lecturer and then to Senior Lecturer. Then in 1986, he moved to the Science faculty, where he remained until his retirement in 1999 in the Unit for History and Philosophy of Science.

    Staying active
    He is a member of the international committee of &HPS. Over the course of his years in education and careers, he was awarded a Centenary Medal for ‘Services to the Humanities in the area of History and Philosophy of Science’. His book "What Is This Thing Called Science" has been improved and updated each decade since it was first published by Dr. Chalmers. It is available in 19 different languages.
