    Al Qaida ,which in Arabic means "the base", was originally founded by Osama bin Laden at some point in aqust 1988 and late 1989. Its origins have been traced back to the Afghanistan and the Soviet union war. It is formed primarily of mujahedeen, meaning holy warriors, and others fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan.

    First Attack By Al Qaida
    The first attack by Al Qaida was in Aden, Yemen. The first bomb went off at the Gold Mohur hotel,as shown in the picture, where U.S. troops had stayed at while en route to Somalia, but the troops already left when the bomb exploded. The bombers then targeted another hotel, the Aden Movenpick, where they thought American troops might also be staying. The bomb went off earlier than it was suppose to in the hotel parking lot and killed two Australian tourists.

    The USS Cole was attacked on thursday morning on the southern part of Aden Harbor. This attack killed 17 sailors and injured 39. Along with other plotters, it was also plotted by future september 11 hijacker Khalid al-Mihdhar. The picture shows where the ship was hit by the bomb.

    Two packages, both containing a bomb, were found on a cargo plane.The bombs were found as a result of intelligence received from Saudi Arabia's security chief. They were sent from Yemen to the United States, and were discovered at en route stop-overs, one at East Midlands Airport in the UK and one in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

    Osama bin Laden, shown in the picture, was killed in Abbottabad, Pakistan around 1 a.m. Bin Laden's compound was attacked by CIA paramilitaries and a Navy SEAL team.The raid was launched from Afghanistan. After the raid, the U.S. forces took Bin Laden's body for identification. After confirming Bin Laden's death, they took his body and burried it under the sea within 24 hours.
