  • Aden, Yemen - Hotel Bombings

    Aden, Yemen - Hotel Bombings
    Al Qaeda’s first terrorist attack was on December 29 when two bombs went off in the Movenpick Hotel and the Gold Mohur Hotel in Aden, Yemen. The intention of the bombs were to kill American soldiers staying at the hotel. No American soldiers were killed, only an Australian tourist and a hotel employee. Seven other people were injured from the bomb attacks, most of which were Yemenis.

    On February 26, 1993, terrorists placed approximately 1,200 pounds of explosives in a van, parked in the parking garage underneath the World Trade Center. The explosion cut off the power throughout both towers, which caused millions of people to be trapped in stationary elevators. Overall, the explosion caused six deaths, but over one thousand people were injured and over 50 thousand people evacuated the buildings. Out of those injured, 88 were firefighters and 35 were police officers.

    Dar ed Salaam, Tanzania - Truck Bombing
    On August 7, 1998, a United States Embassy was bombed by a team of Al Qaeda operatives in Tanzania. The truck bombing was set off by suicide bombers placed outside of the embassy. During the explosion, windows shattered in areas as far as one kilometer away from the explosion. In the bombing, 10 people were killed and 77 were wounded.

    Nairobi, Kenya - Truck Bombing
    On Aug 7, 1998, suicide bombers placed a truck with an estimated 3 to17 tons of explosive material outside of the United States embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. The bombs went off almost simultaneously with the truck bombing in Tanzania. Even though the bombs were intended to kill mostly Americans, only 12 Americans died and the majority of the casualties were local citizens. The bombing created about 212 deaths and injured about 4,000 people.

    On October 12, 2000, the USS Cole was refueling at a port in Aden, Yemen when it was bombed by two suicide bombers. As the crew was getting ready to eat lunch, a boat full of explosives stopped next to the USS Cole. The crew of the USS Cole exchanged greetings with the suicide bombers just seconds before the explosives blew a 40 ft. wide hole in the side of the ship. The explosion killed 17 crew members and wounded 39 others.

    PentagonOn September 11, 2001, American Airlines Flight 77 flew into the western side of the Pentagon in Arlington Country, Virginia after being hijacked by Al Qaeda terrorists. The airplane was loaded with 10,000 gallons of fuel and traveling at 325 miles per hour when it crashed into the Pentagon. 125 Pentagon workers were killed in the attack as well as every person on the crashed airplane, and 400,000 square feet of the building was demolished by the attack.

    World Trade CenterOn September 11, 2001, five terrorists hijacked American Airlines flight 11 and crashed it into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. About 15 minutes later, another five terrorists hijacked United Airlines flight 175 and exploded it into the South Tower. The plane that crashed into the North Tower was carrying approximately 10,000 gallons of jet fuel. From the attack on the World Trade Center, 2,606 people died and more than 5,000 people were injured.

    On November 20, 2003, two truck bombs went off while President George W. Bush was meeting with the British Prime Minister in Istanbul, Turkey. The suicide bombers timed the two bombs to go off when the traffic light by the trucks was red to maximize the effect of the bombs. It is unsure whether the arrival of the president of the United States and bombings were coincidental, but likely it was planned. The explosions caused 30 deaths and 400 injuries.

    Five days before the explosions, two other truck bombs containing suicide bombers in Istanbul, Turkey attacked two synagogues killing 27 people and injured 300 others.
  • Amman, Jordan - Car and Belt Bombings

    Amman, Jordan - Car and Belt Bombings
    On November 9, 2005, suicide bombers simultaneously attacked three American hotels, the Radisson SAS, the Grand Hyatt, and Days Inn, which were all just a few hundred yards apart from each other. The suicide bombers at the Radisson and Grand Hyatt were wearing explosive belts set to detonate simultaneously and the bomber at the Days Inn set of a car bomb. The bombings killed at least 67 people and wounded more than 150 others.
  • Sanaa, Yemen - Car Bombing

    Sanaa, Yemen - Car Bombing
    On September 16, 2008, terrorists disguised as soldiers set off two car bombs outside of the United States Embassy in Sana, Yemen. As well as the two car bombs, the terrorists also fired rifles and rocket-propelled grenades at the embassy. More than 25 Al- Qaeda terrorists were arrested for the attack. A total of 16 people were killed in the bombings. Out of the 16 dead, 6 were attackers, 6 were Yemeni guards, and 4 were civilians.
