In June and July of 2006, the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) took over Mogadishu. Mogadishu is Somalia's capitol. The ICU is the organization that will be transformed into al-Shabab later. -

USA declares al-Shabab terrorists
Al-Shabab was declared a terrorist organization by the USA. The departement of State released a message saying that al-Shabab is classified as a terrorist group and can be viewed as a potential threat. -
Ethiopian troops pull out and Sharif is elected
The last Ethiopian troops that were fighting al-Shabab left the country. Also, in this month, Sharif Ahmed was elected president of Somalia. -
al-Shabab takes Mogadishu
The event was called the battle of Mogadishu. After 2009, 1,739 people had been killed. Afterwords, the capitol of Somalia was in the hands of al-Shabab. -
Ugandan Capitol Bombings
As a "message" to Uganda, al-Shabab bombs Uganda's capitol: Kampala. The bombings took place during a world cup game. 76 fans died and 70 more were injured -
Mogadishu attacks
Al-Shabab attacks Somali capital Mogadishu (again), killing around 300 people in the bombings. The bombing occured at a hotel that Somali government officials had been known to attend. -
Somalia takes Mogadishu
Somalian troops with AMISOM capture the last parts of Mogadishu away from al-Shabab soldiers. This sparks some hope into the idea of Somalia defeating al-Shabab for good. -
Joining al-Qaeda
The group announces that they have had ties with al-Qaeda for some time and will be merging with the organization. This irritates other countries, proving al-Shabab as a true threat. -
Somali General killed
General Farah of Somalia was killed by al-Shabab. He had a very high rank in the military, being important to the army. This hurts the moral of the Somali people.
