The United States launched Operation Enduring Freedom. Us and many other countries fought to overthrow the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. The Taliban is a Muslim group who took control over most of Afghanistan. Al-Qaeda is a terrorist organization in Afghanistan.

Mohammed Atef was the military cheif of Al-Qaeda. In 1996, Abu Ubaidah al-Banshiri, Al-Qaeda's leader drowned and Mohammed took his place. He was killed in a U.S. airstrike.

US army was trying to kill/capture. Bin Laden escaped to somewhere around Pakistan by horse. Many were killed at the battle that lasted two weeks but Bin Laden got away.
