  • Leonid Brezhnev

    Leonid Brezhnev
    Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev was the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Leonid Brezhnev was president from 1964 until his death in November 10 1982. The global influence of the Soviet Union grew dramatically, in part because of the expansion of the Soviet military during this time. His tenure as leader was marked by the beginning of an era of economic and social stagnation in the Soviet Union. He presided over the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czecho.

    Osama Bin  Laden
    Osama was extremely wealthy and used his wealth to buy warfare, and provide medical care. The Soviets went to war with Afghanistan and the Americans supported Osama and other soldiers to defeat the USSR, by giving them weapons. Even though aided the war, Bin Laden still disliked the U.S.
    He was responsible for two bombings on the U.S. Embassies in East Africa in the year 1988.
    Osama Bin Laden was responsible for the world’s most devastating attack, 9/11.

    Babrak Karmal
    Babrak Karmal was the Afghanistan president from 1979-1986. The Soviet Union supported him and invaded Afghanistan and he was placed into power. The United States did not support this because now Afghanistan has become communist.

    Mujahideen Alliance

    The Mujahideen is the Islamic guerilla fighters in used in the Afghan war against the Soviets. Mujahideen translates to the freedom fighters. The Mujahideen Alliance is when Soviet Mikhail Gorbachev came to a conclusion to the unwanted war. After multiple United Nations meetings the United States, Pakistan, and the Soviet Union agreed to stop foreign interference in Afghanistan in May 1988. The Soviets started to withdraw troops shortly after May and it was finished by February 1989.

    Taliban

    A fundamentalist Islamic militia in Afghanistan first known in 1992- present day. The Taliban army: in 1996 defeated the ruling Mujahideen factions and took control of the capital of Afghanistan; Kabul. In 2001 the Taliban was later overthrown by US-led forces.

    1992 Civil War

    The 1992 to 1996 phase of the conflict in Afghanistan (1978–present) began after the resignation of the communist President Mohammad Najibullan. All Afghan parties agreed to the peace- and power-sharing agreement, except for Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.Hekmtyar wanted to be the ruler of Afghanistan. The U.S pressured Afghanistan into staopping whatever their plans and strategies were, but it was held off until 1992. The Civil War of 1992 involved many attacks and was basically started for power.

    Taliban seize Kabul

    The Taliban entered Kandahar in November 1994 and by September 1996 they too control of the capital, Kabul. The Taliban overtook Kabul from President Burhanuddin Rabbani whom they viewed corrupt.

    UN air embargo on Afghanistan

    In October 1996, in response to on-going violent conflict in Afghanistan in October 1996 UN Security Council imposed a voluntary arms embargo on Afghanistan, calling upon all States to stop the supply of arms and aids to everyone involved in the conflict in Afghanistan.
  • USSR, U.S., Pakistan and Afghanistan Peace Accords

    Leaders from the United States, Soviet Union, Pakistan and Afghanistan sign an agreement that the USSR will withdraw their troops from Afghanistan. Afghanistan and Pakistan agreed not to interfere in each other’s problems and the United States agreed to stop the supplying of weapons and to the Mujahideen.

    9/11 was a terrorist attack against the U.S. by 19 militants who belonged to the Extremist group named al-Qaeda. On September 11, 2011 these members hijacked four planes and carried out suicide attacks on The World Trade Center, The Pentagon and one plane was targeting the White House. Close to 3,000 people died in a result of these attacks.

    The war in Afgahnistan occured shortly after 9/11. The object of this invasion was to remove Taliban from power. George W. Bush demanded that the Taliban hand over Osama bin Laden and expel al-Qaeda, bin Laden had already been wanted by the U.N. since 1999. Many militaral actions have been taken over the span of these invasions. U.S. Invasion was a big era in history.
