  • John Byington takes office.

    John Byington takes office.
    John Byington was the first president of the Adventist General Conference. His father, Justus, was a soldier in the American Revolution. John was active in the antislavery movement, and when he found out his church, the Methodist Episcol Church, opposed abolitionism, he immediately joined the new antislavey Wesleyan Methodist Connection.
  • James Springer White takes office.

    James Springer White takes office.
    James Springer White was the second to take office. He was also known as "Elder White". He was the husband of Ellen White. In 1849, he started the first Sabbatarian Adventist periodical called "The Present Truth." Later, he played a major role in the development of the Adventist educational structure that began in 1874 with the formation of Battle Creek College which is now Andrews University.

    John Nevins Andrews takes office.
    John Nevins Andrews is the third to take office. He was the first official Seventh-day Adventist missionary, writer, editor, and scholar. Andrews University is named after him. Andrews' wife died of a stroke in 1872, so he moved to South Lancaster, Massachusetts where his kids could be looked after.

    James Springer White was the second, fourth, and sixth to take office. He was also known as "Elder White". He was the husband of Ellen White.     George Ide Butler was the fifth, and seventh to take office. George was converted at the age of 22 and baptized by J N. Andrews. In 1872, due to James White's failing health, Butler took office. In 1901, Lentha died, and George was elected first president of the Florida Conference. The next year became the first President of the South Union Conference and the Southern Publishing Association.
