    Civil War

  • Fort Sumter Attack

    Fort Sumter Attack
This confederate attack angers the Creightons. They have a long discussion about whether or not war will start. Some of the men claim that they will go to war.
Eb decides to go to war. This is the main reason i believe this "battle" is important. I also believe it is important because this beginning of the war will change Jethro's life forever.
  • Wilson's Creek Battle

    Wilson's Creek Battle
After this battle, Bill decides to go to war, devastating Jethro. Jethro is closest to Bill, and the thought of never seeing him again upsets Jethro. Jethro tries to get him to stay, but to know avail.
This event is important because it is the last time we "see" Bill. When we hear from him again, it is through John's letter. And all he says is "it was not my bullet that killed Tom".
  • Ball's Bluff Battle

    Ball's Bluff Battle
Before this battle, everyne was saying the Union would win easily. Soon, though, the optimism drained from everyone. The war was now believed to go on longer.
This batlle is important because before this battle, Tom and Eb were saying "we'll take the South 'by the britches'". After, they are unsure..
  • Battle of Shiloh

    Battle of Shiloh
The battle of Shiloh is important because It is in this battle that Tom is killed. Jethro was not close to Tom, but it still caused alot of pain in his family.
Jethro's family had lost young children to disease before and it was a miracle him and his sister didnt fall ill. This battle also falls after the Creighton's barn is burned down by harassers who believe Bill is a traitor for joining the South.
  • Antietem Battle

    Antietem Battle
It is after this battle that derserters start showing up in Jethro's hometown. They are atealing food from stores and homes. Burnside also repalces McClellan.
After this battle, men come to the house, asking if Eb has come home. A few days later, Jethro finds Eb and writes to Lincoln, asking what he should do about his brother. Lincoln writes back, saying all deserters can go back into war without punishment if back by a certain day.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    Battle of Fredericksburg
Before this battle, the war is said to be going well. But then, it all goes downhill. The Union loses faith after this loss.
This battle, to me, is important because Shad writes home again. He writes before this battle, and afterwords, when he doesn't write for a while, they expect the worst. When he finally writes back, everyone heaves a sigh of reliefe.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
After Gettysburg, Lincoln writes and delivers the Gettysburg adress. Then word reaches Jethro that Shadrach was badly injured in this battle. Milton takes Jenny to visit Shad, and they marry.
Jethro, like with Bill, is close to Shad. He is also close to Jenny, and worries for both of their well-being. He marks their wedding on the ledger in their Bible.
  • Battle of Chickamauga

    Battle of Chickamauga
After this battle, Lincoln says he will pardon Confederates who are willing to rejoin the union. But many southerners, and northerners are angry with him.
Also at this battle, John is a big help in th North's victory. Before Nancy finds this out, she blieves he is dead. The whole family is relieved to hear this news.
