9 year old Jethro and his mom Ellen, were planting potatoes for there small farm and family. While they are busy working the rest of the family is working on other things. jenny is cooking, Nancy is taking care of the kids. John, Eb, Matt, Tom, and Shad are plowing. This is the start of the book. A peaceful time when the whole family is together before the start of the war.

Shadrach brought back news from town if the a war has started or not. The papers say that Anderson's men at Fort Sumter have been on starvation rations for several days, and that the President warned govern Pickens of South Carolina of his intention to send provisions to them; he made it clear to be only provisions. The confederates demanded that Anderson give up the fort and all government property in it. He refused. A southern general gave the order to fire.

Wilse is Ellen's nephew from Kentucky. Kentucky is different because they have slaves. Although Kentucky does not end up seceding from the Union and joining the Confederacy the debate of this happening is still in the air. The family has a nice dinner while talking about the possibility of War. The family gets in a huge argument before Ellen settles them down.

Tom and Eb leave first to go fight with Grant in September after the battle of Bull Run . Both are excited and have high hopes the War will go fast, Ellen thinks they are foolish for thinking war will be fun.

Though out the city and the towns of the north all the bells rang because of Union victories. The first had came with the fall of Fort Henry and the second with Fort Donelson. "God bless Grant" was rang from the from the towns. Although many thought the war might soon be over because of these victories, Matt was unconvinced and saw the trouble ahead. Shad was also unconvinced that the War was soon to be over saying that we only gained access to Tennessee and the deeper south.

Jethro goes to Shad's before he leaves to go fight for the Union. While he is there they talk about Bill's decision and how he's not wrong or right, but brave to do what he believes in. They also discuss Jethro's plan for learning while he is gone.

Bill, Jethro's older brother, has a heart to heart conversation after Bill and John get in a fight, and Bill ends up telling Jeth that he is going to go fight for the Confederates. This effects Jeth a lot because he knows that there is a good chance he will never see that person he looks up most to.

Jeth's dad has a, Matt, has a stroke leavening more work, chores, and responsibility on young Jeth.

Ellen is addicted to coffee and with prices so high and there being a shortage of it the family does not want to buy the coffee. The coffee finally runs out in late march so Ellen tries to have weaker cups but then she may as well not have drunken any at all. Ellen gets horrible headaches when she doesn't have coffee and she is stuck in bed. She tries to suffer through and says her body will just have to get use to it, but It is so bad Matt sends Jeth to Nancy's to ask for coffee for the now.

Ellen needs more coffee, and Matt need errands done in town. So he decided to send 11 year old Jeth to town by himself to sell the grain and pick supplies up. On his way he meets a neighbor who would like a newspaper, and he catches his fisrt of many griefs about Bill going off to Join the rebs. He finds a friend in Ross who takes him for lunch and helps him get back on his way. As he goes home guys from town, try to take out his wagon but another friend saves the day

Grant was surprised near the Tennessee river at Pittsburgh Landing. This is where Tom died quickly and painlessly.

In one of the many attacks against the Creighton's, their barn is burnt down. They find that Guy Wortman and some allies did it because Bill went off to join the rebs. Sam Gardener shoots Guy in the butt, this causes humiliation and he leaves the alone.

Shad writes to a love letter to his love Jenny, Jethro's sister.

During spring planting, and after Union representatives came to the house, Jeth hears turkey calling and goes to investigate, it turns out to be Eb. Eb deserted, meaning he ran away from battle. Jeth give Eb food to recover his strength. During this Jeth writes to President Lincoln and he gets a response because of this response he ideals Lincoln. The response says Eb and many others are allowed to report back to there post with little punishment.

This is where tom was stationed after President Lincoln let him back into the army after he deserted.

A long 3 day battle, the Union's biggest victory in the War and the bloodiest battle of the War. The army of Northern Virginia never recovered. This is where Shad was injured.

Jenny goes to Washington to see her love, Shad after he was hurt in Gettysburgh. While she is there she request to marry Shad and she is allowed.

This is a battle John took place in and only his unit survived.

The counter attach to Chattanooga, John and his unit had a major role in this victory.

Grant took the town of Petersburg which supplied the town of Richmond Virginia, one of the last major victories for the Union

Sherman's March was when Union soldiers took out thousands of miles of southern territory. The soldiers burned and destroyed everything they came across. During which the army lost contact with Washington and everyone worried of what happened to them. A family friend of the Creighton's worries about his son wondering if he thought disrespecting property was truly praised.

Was the last major battle in the western theater and a major Union victory.
