The war starts when Lincoln gets elected for president. It is caused by different perceptions on slavery, tariffs, trade, and states rights between the northern and the southern states. Eleven southern states wants to leave the Union and form their own country, "the Confederacy". The war is won by the Union (the Northern states). Around 700,000 people die.

The Children's Crusade was a protest march by thousands of school students in Birmingham, Alabama. They left school to march for civil rights. Police officers tried to stop them by using fire hoses and police dogs to attack the children. Then the police arrested as many as they could, released them only to have them marching again the next day.
