A Nation Divided Timeline

  • 3/5ths Comprise

    3/5ths Comprise

The southern states wanted the enslaved people to count towards the population. But the northern states did not like this, because slaves could not vote. So they compromised and said that every 3/5 slaves counted towards the population. This is sectionalism because the Southerners are thinking of their own section (the Southerners).
  • Period: to

    Westward Expansion

Westward Expansion started in 1787. The main part of it was the Louisiana Purchase, which acquired a new part of America to explore. The first explorers of this territory were Lewis and Clark, they found a route to the Pacific Ocean. Next in 1840 the Oregon Trail which was settlers moving west for the California gold rush. Stephen A Douglas wanted to travel west to easier and safer, so he built a train. This is Nationalism because it is for the benefit of the nation. (it is expanding the nation)
  • States Rights

    States Rights

Amendment 10 states that the states have the right to hold powers not specifically assigned to the federal government. This is sectionalism because it is the rights of the states (a section of the nation).
  • Period: to

    Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was not underground nor was it on a railroad. It was a network of people whites and free blacks who worked to help slaves run away from slave-holding states. They would help the slaves travel into the north and into Canada. The Underground Railroad is sectionalism because it is for the benefit of the slaves and the North, the South does not want their slaves to run away.
  • Fredrick Douglas

    Fredrick Douglas

Fredrick Douglas was an escaped slave that started the abolitionist movement. He advised president Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson during the civil war. Fredrick Douglas believed in sectionalism because he wanted the slaves to be freed and for America to be a free country. The South did not like this though, they wanted America to be a slave country.
  • Compromise of 1820

    Compromise of 1820

The Compromise happened when Missouri applied for statehood in 1817. Missouri was a slave state and they would ruin the balance of 11 slave states and 11 free states. So in 1820, they compromised and admitted Missouri and Maine so it would be 12 slave states and 12 free states. It created the Missouri Line Separating the South from the West. This is nationalism, it is growing the nation by admitting more states. Growing the Nation is good because of taxes, the growth of the army, and population.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850

The Compromise happened when California applied to the US as a free state. After this, some Southern states threatened to secede if California was admitted. But Henry Clay had an idea, he admitted California as a free state. Then he got Texas to give up some land to pay off war debts, and he let popular sovereignty decide positions of slavery in new states. Henry Clay made this decision for the Nation and to let the nation grow. The Compromise of 1850 is nationalism.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act

In 1852 the Kansas-Nebraska Act was created. The Kansas-Nebraska Act was an act that created two new territories (Kansas and Nebraska) and allowed popular sovereignty inside those territories to decide about their policies on slavery. Along with creating two new territories, Stephen A Douglas wanted to create a train to make it easier to travel west. The Kansas-Nebraska Act is nationtalism because it is growing the nation and allowing easier, safer, and more affordable travel.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation

In 1863 Licon issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Which said all slaves should be free. But he could not end slavery, yet he could seize enemy property including slaves. So any rebellious area to the Emancipation Proclamation he would seize their slaves and their land. This is sectionalism because Lincon is doing this for the benefit of the North, the South is against this.
