A Nation Divided

  • Period: to

    Westward Expansion

Westward expansion was our nation's journey to the Pacific Coast. Manifest Destiny influenced it, which was the idea that God was leading them to the West & that many better opportunities lay there for them. Manifest Destiny pulled many people to take the journey west. This led to sectionalism because slavery expanded throughout America. Slavery led to the CW because it was a separation between the North & West & there was no simple solution even abolitionists didn't agree how to end it.
  • 3/5 Compromise

    3/5 Compromise

The people in the South wanted slaves living in their state to count for their pop, leading to more representatives in Congress. The Northern people thought slaves were considered property & should count for taxation. The solution was the 3/5 Compromise which allowed every 3 out of 5 slaves to count for the state's pop & taxation. It was sectionalism bc it classified slaves were worth less than humans. This lead to the CW bc it increased the power of slave holders & grew tensions with the North.
  • State Rights (Amendment 10)

    State Rights (Amendment 10)

States Rights was when the Southerners began to think that the government held too much power. They believed that the government was taking away the voice of the state. This caused sectionalism because the southern states wanted to get rid of the federal government so they would not have the laws they did not like and more power. This lead to the CW
  • Period: to

    Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was not an actual railroad but a network of routes with safe houses to stay in. The railroad was meant for enslaved African Americans hoping to escape and travel to free states where they could be free. The Underground Railroad led to sectionalism because it caused tensions in the South because of slave runaways and made slaveholders despise the North even more.
  • Compromise of 1820 (Missouri Compromise)

    Compromise of 1820 (Missouri Compromise)

The compromise began with MO entering as a ss & ME as a free state. A line was then added that ss had to be south of latitude 36º30 north. MO was the only exception north of the line. This was sectionalism bc the Northerns who voted MO to be a ss were called traitors & the South people were mad bc they were prevented from having ss in the North territories which aren't even states yet. This lead to the CW bc it was the beginning of the territorial slave vs free state conflict. ss=slave state
  • Harriet Tubman

    Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman escaped slavery in 1849. She went to PA once free, & she began to help others get free through the UR. The UR was a very dangerous job if she was to get caught. She helped over 70 enslaved people through the railroad. She later held a role in the Union Army as a nurse, spy, & scout. Her great accomplishments led to sectionalism & helped many enslaved people get free. That led to many slave owners fearing what to do without slaves and led to the CW.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850

When the US admitted more land in the west, the free & ss balance was uneven. They tried to even it by the Compromise of 1850. This allowed CA to be a free state. In UT & NM, popular sovereignty was allowed, which gave the people a choice. The Fugitive Slave Law was then passed. DC later banned the allowance of slave trade. TX gained $10,000,000 & made a border with NM. This was sectionalism bc the compromise favored the North with an imbalance of 19-15. South tensions grew & led to the CW.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act

The Kansas Nebraska Act allowed popular sovereignty for Kansas & Nebraska instead of assigning the states to be free or slave. This caused the "Bleeding Kansas" bc many people fought over what the vote should be. This caused sectionalism bc it divided slavery & free states between the north & south. The Kansas Nebraska Act also increased tensions with people throughout these states because of the vote which lead to the CW.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation

The Emancipation Proclamation allowed enslaved people to be free. The only enslaved people allowed to be free were in states not under the Union's control, including South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Arkansas, and North Carolina. The Emancipation Proclamation led to nationalism and created a pathway to abolishing slavery it helped to make the US a whole again. The Emancipation Proclamation helped to end the CW.
