A Nation Divided

  • Period: to

    Abolitonionism

Abolitionism was a movement carried out to abolish slaverly. In 1808 the U.S. Congress passed a law that ended the Atlantic slave trade. I would say this is nationalism because it is talking about the nation as a whole and it is effecting the nation as a whole.
  • 3/5 compromise

    3/5 compromise

3/5 Compromise was the idea that for every five slaves 3 of them counted toward the total population of that state. This would be considered sectionalism because it is toward the country but benefits one side way more than the other.
  • Period: to

    Westward Expansion

Westward Expansion(W.E.)was based off the idea of manifest destiny to where Americans had the God given right to expand. One of the main ways WE, created conflict was how it separated the nation in two. WE created more states to disagree with slavery, because the south depended on slavery for cash crops while the North was more focused on industrial. Westward expansion connect to Nationalism because it is more to the idea of benefiting the whole country.
  • States Rights

    States Rights

The States rights issue was a problem to where southerners had thought that the government was taking too much power over the states. They also thought that they were getting robbed of their sovereignty, witch means that they are not being able to make their own choices.I beleive that this is Sectionalism because only the southerners have a problem with it and only them are fighting for popular sovereignty.
  • Period: to

    Fugative State Law

This was a law that caused all escaped slaves to have to go back to their owners. It also allowed for the owners to capture the slaves that escaped. This would also make the federal government responsible for returning and trialing escaped slaves. This act encouraged people to help capture escapees, the North was against it and protested it.The North passed laws to make it hard for enslavers to win in court. This is nationalism because it would effect and change the nation as a whole.
  • Period: to

    Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad (1810-1850) was a series of routes that would all lead North to where all the free states were, along these routes there would be safe houses along the way for the escaping people to rest get food and bathe. The Underground Railroad was used to guide approximately one-hundred thousand enslaved people to free states, to escape slavery. The Underground Railroad would be connected to sectionalism, because it would only be effecting owners of enslaved people.
  • Compromise of 1820

    Compromise of 1820

The Compromise of 1820 was a deal breaker to a debate between having more slave states and free states and this would give the slave states a majority. they decided to let Missouri in to the country has a slave state and let Main in has a free state to make it even. This would be Nationalism because it is coming to an agreement that does not help each side wile helps each side equally.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850

The compromise of 1850 had 5 main parts witch were. 1. California admitted as a free state, 2. popular sovereignty in UT and NM, 3. Fugitive state law, 4. D.C. bans the slave trade, 5. Texas receives 10 million dollars and creates boarder with new Mexico. The Compromise of 1850 would be considerd Nationalism because it is not just focused on benifits of one state but on the goal of imporving the nation as a whole.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision

The Dred Scott Decision was a court case to where he lived in a State as a slave then moved with his owner into a free state so he trialed to be free under free state laws. He won the case but the state where he moved from trialed against him, so they brought in the Supreme Justice. 4 of the justices were from the north and 4 of them were from the south. in the end the judges said that he was not fir for citizenship. This would be considerd nationalism because the outcome effected all states.
