The westward expansion was a time period when people were moving westward. Since many people were moving westward, the balance of territory between slaves and free states was uneven. The slave states were interested in expanding westward in order to balance the territory that they had relative to the free states. The free states are different from the slave states in this manner, making it an example of sectionalism.

The southern states wanted their enslaved persons to count toward their overall pop #. Counting the slaves as part of the pop. gives them a larger # of reps in the HOP. The Northern states did not want the South to gain these extra seats & decided to compromise that ⅗ of the enslaved pop. counts towards the pop & tax. This compromise benefited the southern states because of their enslaved pop. This counted towards the overall pop, giving them a larger #. This is an example of sectionalism. -
Many Southerners thought the government was getting too powerful & did not have enough power for themselves. This amendment stated that any right or power not given to the federal government in the Constitution was given to the states. Amendment 10 was put in place to make sure the people could have rights too. This amendment was put in place to protect the rights of the states & people, helping to make the United States more fair & equal. This is an example of nationalism. -
The underground railroad was a network of people during the civil war. Many different people, such as farmers, ministers, and business owners, helped slaves escape from the South. This railroad mainly benefited people who were enslaved, trying to escape, so an example of sectionalism.

If Missouri joined as a slave state, the slave states would then have the majority in the Senate. To avoid this, Maine was added as a free state in an attempt to keep the balance equal. But the rest of the Louisiana Purchase had not been dealt with. They made a compromise to split the remaining territory in half for equal slave states vs. free states. Because this compromise benefited the people of the United States, it is an example of nationalism. -
Harriet Tubman was an African American woman who was born in March 1822 and died in March 1913. She was an escaped enslaved woman. Before the Civil War, she bravely went back 13 times to help enslaved people escape during the underground railroad. Sadly, she received little pay for her Union military service. Harriet Tubman was a person trying to help enslaved people escape, benefiting themselves, which is an example of sectionalism. -
The Compromise of 1850 was an agreement between the slave states and free states. There were 5 different bills passed as part of the agreement. California was admitted as a free state while popular sovereignty was passed in UT & NM. Also, the Fugitive Law was passed and D.C. banned the slave trade. Lastly, Texas received 10 million dollars & created a border with New Mexico. Because this compromise strongly benefitted the Northern states, it is an example of sectionalism. -
Passed on 9/18/1850, the Fugitive Slave Law required runaway slaves to be returned to their owners, even if they made it to a free state. It further tasked the federal government with “finding, returning and trying escaped slaves”. This law mainly benefitted the southern states because it forced their slaves to return, supporting the idea of slavery, which is an example of sectionalism. -
This proclamation was made by President Lincoln during the Civil War on January 1, 1863, saying that “... all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states are, and henceforward shall be free." This meant that any slaves that were living in the southern states were pronounced free. This proclamation benefited the northern states because it was declaring that all slaves were now free, ending slavery. This was an example of sectionalism.
