Westward expansion is the idea that America should expand west from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast. Westward expansion contributed more to nationalism because America needed more land so that more people can join the nation. Therefore I think that westward expansion made America more powerful and brought America together. As more states enter than Union more problems emerged between the North and the South which lead to the Civil War.

The 3/5 compromise was a constitutional convention which stated that every 3 out of 5 slaves was counted towards a state's population for legislative representation. The 3/5 compromise pushed more towards sectionalism because the South was trying to get more power in The House so that they could pass laws. Although the compromise helped keep peace, eventually the north and the south became unsatisfied with all the compromises leading up to the Civil War. -
The South believed that the federal government was getting too powerful so the U.S. made the 10th amendment. It states that powers not given to the U.S. by the constitution and also allowed for the states to have, are reserved for states to decide on. This is Nationalism because the 10th amendment solved the problem of the Federal Government getting too powerful. The 10th amendment lead to the Civil War because while it maintained peace for a bit, the south will became restless for more power. -
The underground railroad was a secret network which was built by abolitionists to help free slaves. Escaping the south as a slave and helping slaves to escape was illegal, so abolitionists had to quietly move slaves across state borders to help them find freedom. This is sectionalism because abolitionists are going against federal laws and taking slaves which will make the South very angry. Eventually the South did find out and became very angry contributing to the start of the Civil War.

The Missouri Compromise was the decision that states north of the compromise line in LA Territory would be free ,and all the states south of the compromise would have popular sovereignty. The compromise line was 36° 30'N. The Missouri compromise supported nationalism because each side got a state and satisfied the North and the South. The Missouri compromise helped create temporary peace but as more states were added the north and the south argued over a new solution, causing more tension. -
The Louisiana Purchase added land to the west. There was 5 parts to the compromise which were, California became a free state, Utah and New Mexico voted rather or not they would be free or slave, the Fugitive Slave Law passed, D.C banned slave trading, Texas gains $10 million and Texas finalizes the border with New Mexico. This is sectionalism because the North gained more representatives in the senate. The South will find this unfair and cause arguments leading up to the Civil War. -
The Fugitive Slave Law was part of The Compromise of 1850, and the act stated that all slaves must be returned to their owners, even if they were in free states. It was also the federal governments job to capture and return escaped slaves. This caused sectionalism because arguments immediately broke out after this law was passed. The slave states wanted their slaves back though the free states did not want to help them because they sought to abolish slavery leading to more tension. -
The first state that declared independence from the U.S. was South Carolina than 10 other slave states followed after. Southern states wanted to protect their state and slaves rights and the U.S. was threatening to take them away. The secession eventually lead to the Civil War because the south wanted to completely separate from the U.S. This is sectionalism because the secession started the Civil War and caused the south to try to section themselves from the union. -
The Emancipation Proclamation was the announcement that all slaves must be freed. It was a decision made by Abraham Lincoln. This was sectionalism because immediately after this was announced nearly all southerns revolted and southern newspapers attacked Lincoln. They accused Lincoln of trying to start a slave rebellion and it definItely divided the North and South. The Emancipation Proclamation changed the reason for war which is to free slaves.
