Westward Expansion is when the United States were moving west for more opportunities, new lives, and more land. There were many events in Westward Expansion such as the Louisiana Purchase, the Texas Annexation, the Trail of Tears, and many other things all of which led America to where it is today. Westward Expansion is nationalism because the thought of moving west was made to benefit the whole country, not just specific regions. Everyone in America was put into thought with Westward Expansion.

Slave states wanted the slaves to count as part of their population but the free states were arguing that they should count towards taxation, not representation. It was then decided that ⅗ of the slave population are going to count towards the total population but they will also count towards taxation. This is sectionalism because its mainly benefiting slave states since they will have more of a voice in congress. That can make such a big difference making the taxes not a very big deal. -
The south felt that the federal government had too much power. They also thought they didn’t have their sovereignty. Their economy is not doing very well since their cash crops need lots of work on them. Because of this, they decide to use slaves to get this done cheaper. This is sectionalism because the south is focused on their own section and they just want to be able to have more of a voice for themselves. They are not really factoring in what may be going on for the other sections. -
The underground railroad was a route that slaves took to be free. There were white and free African-American people that took this route and traveled north to Canada. This is nationalism because it lets enslaved people become free and become a part of the nation as a whole where everyone is equal.

Missouri being admitted to the U.S. would give slave states the majority in the senate. The compromise is Missouri would be admitted as a slave state and Maine as a free state. The problem is the whole rest of the Louisiana Purchase was not thought about so a compromise line was created at 36° 30’N. The states North of this line would be free and states south would have popular sovereignty. This is sectionalism because it's focused on Missouri being able to have it their way being a slave state. -
In 1845-1848 most new land in the U.S. was added west of the Louisiana Purchase. An idea was to extend the Compromise line to the Pacific Ocean. California joined the U.S. as a free state, Utah and New Mexico got popular sovereignty, then fugitive slave law passed. D.C. Slave Trade was banned and Texas got $10 million to end the border disagreement with New Mexico. This is nationalism because it made the country better as a whole, not letting specific sections become more powerful than others. -
The fugitive slave law is an act where any slaves that escaped from their owners (no matter if they are free or slave states) must be returned. This is sectionalism because this isn’t benefiting the whole country. The only people that are happy with this act are slave states who are getting their slaves back. The free states, however, did not like this law and they wanted to get rid of it. -
Harper’s Ferry is the time when John Brown and the people who believed in what he did left their hideout to go to Harper’s Ferry. There they imprisoned important people and stopped the national arsenal and armory. This invasion helped make accommodations between the north and south very hard to do. This is sectionalism because it was a big blowout since the southern states thought that all people in northern states were abolitionists. -
The Emancipation Proclamation was a law made by president Lincoln that stated all slaves are free. Although it stated that, it wasn’t immediately put into use because the confederate states ignored it. I believe this is nationalism because it united the people and made it so everyone is equal.
