The Compromise says that 3/5ths of the population would count towards population and taxation. This supports sectionalism and nationalism because this helped both the North and the South when they only wanted to help themselves. The South wanted its population to grow and the North wanted slaves to be taxed. This benefited the whole nation. -
The Southerners felt as if the federal government was getting too powerful. they also thought they were robbing the states of their sovereignty. Slaves were needed for cheap labor for their cash crops. -
The Underground Railroad was about slaves escaping enslavement during the Civil War. Abolitionists helped slaves to escape and they used safe houses to hide the slaves and migrate them to safety. Admitting Missouri into the nation as a slave state would give more power to slave states in the Senate. this was a problem so Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine as a free state. But the rest of the Louisiana Purchase had to be sorted and so states north of 36° 30' were free states and south of the line would have popular sovereignty. -
Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and was a key part of the underground railroad. This compromise added most of the land west of the Louisiana Purchase between 1845 to 1848. Many things happened, California was admitted as a free state, Popular Sovereignty is now in New Mexico and Utah, the Fugitive Slave Law was passed, Washington D.C. bans the slave trade, and Texas receives 10 million dollars and creates a boarder with New Mexico. The North benefits from this. -
This act created two new territories called Kansas and Nebraska. This act also ended the Missouri Compromise. This act allowed popular sovereignty to be used. Kansas became a place where farmers would go because of its land and some came to support or oppose enslavement. Kansas had two governments, one fighting to allow slaves, and one fighting against them. This relates to the whole nation because Kansas is also facing the problem of slavery. -
This Proclamation was made by Abraham Lincoln, who was the president at the time, and stated that all slaves should be freed and was created during the Civil War. This didn't completely end slavery in the Union because it was for the military, but allowed many people to live freely after the war. around 4 million slaves were freed after the war. This ended many conflicts about slaves because slaves were now free and people would not fight over slave states.
