A Nation Divided

  • Period: to

    Westward Expansion

Westward Expansion is the idea that our nation should expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. During westward expansion people and families expanded and moved from their beloved homes to go on a journey searching for the new forever home. This connects to nationalism because as our union expands we become one larger nation instead of splitting.
  • ⅗ Compromise

    ⅗ Compromise

Both the northern and southern states were arguing over population representation in congress and taxation of enslaved people. So they made a compromise that delegates agree that ⅗th’s of the population would count towards both population and taxation. This connects to sectionalism by dividing our nation between the southern states and northern states by disagreeing on the amount representation in congress based on population.
  • States Rights (Amendment 10)

    States Rights (Amendment 10)

Before the rights were passed many southerners felt the government was becoming to powerful, they believed they were being robbed of their money. So for a solution the 10th Amendment was passed states that if the government powers are not stated in the constitution the rest is left to the states. This connects to sectionalism because instead of the national government controlling some power is divided into the states, creating a more divided nation.
  • Period: to

    Underground Railroad

The underground railroad was a resource for enslaved people to escape slavery and live a free life towards the end of the Civil War. The underground railroad was not underground and it was not a train it was actually a group of people white and free blacks that worked together to help runaways form slaveholding states. This connects to sectionalism because it divided our country into two groups, those being who agreed with slavery and those who disagreed.
  • Compromise of 1820 (Missouri Compromise) (March 2, 1820)

Compromise of 1820 (Missouri Compromise) (March 2, 1820)

The problem before the compromise was that if Missouri was admitted as a slave state their would be more representation in the senate for the slave-holding states. The Missouri Compromise was an agreement that admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a Free State to make equal representation. This connects to nationalism because this made all states have equal representation bringing the union together.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850

The compromise of 1850 made California a Free State, gave popular sovereignty to Utah and New Mexico, passed the Fugitive Slave Law, D.C. slave trade became banned, Texas received 10 million dollars, and it ended the border dispute with New Mexico. This connects to sectionalism by dividing the states by giving them different laws. Further dividing our states because people will not want to move between states or compromise with them because of different opinions on different state laws.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    Fugitive Slave Law

The act stated that all slaves free and enslaved by others must be returned to their owners, this also made the government responsible for finding and returning the slaves. The Fugitive Slave law was also a part of the Compromise of 1850. This connects to sectionalism because those who want free slaves could hide slaves and keep them free while others will participate in helping the government capture them. This divided our nation because of opinion on slavery.
  • Secession

    Secession

The Secession was first and foremost the cause of the Civil War. 11 southern sates where slavery was legal withdrew from the United States. Following that Abraham Lincoln was then elected President. This supported sectionalism by dividing our country into two, one side being the slave holding states that withdrew and the other side is who kept slavery and stayed apart of the U.S.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation

By the third year of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation. It states that all slaves are free no matter the circumstances. This connects to nationalism by making our U.S. citizens to come to terms with our native people. This brings our country together and grows our population by counting the now non enslaved people.
