A Nation Divided

  • Period: to

    Westward Expansion

Westward Expansion was an idea to spread to the westward region towards the Atlantic coast. The idea is known as Manifest Destiny. Westward Expansion brought business and farmers a fresh start and later brought new territories. Westward expansion was an timespan of nationalism because everybody in the United States was effected by it in someone if that was impacting their job, their family, their life, everyone in the U.S life was changed after this timespan.
  • 3/5 Compromise

    3/5 Compromise

Northern and southern states fought over whether enslaved people would count as their population, giving southern states more laws, reps, and say in government. Northern states had a smaller enslaved population and argued that if enslaved people were considered property and would count toward taxation not representation. It was agreed that 3/5ths of the population would count. I believe that this event was sectionalism because both regions fought for what benefited them and their population.
  • States Rights (Amendment 10)

    States Rights (Amendment 10)

During this event many people in the south felt that the government was gaining too much control over them and their rights. This made a major impact on the economy. I believe that this was sectionalism because southern states felt that their right were being taken away and wanted the government to not be as powerful.
  • Period: to

    The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was a network of people trying to help take slaves to freedom. It was run by abolitionists, people who wanted to get rid of slavery. The Underground Railroad brought anger and fear to southern slave owner making it a movement of sectionalism.
  • Compromise of 1820 (Missouri Compromise)

    Compromise of 1820 (Missouri Compromise)

This event was when Missouri was discussed to be taken in as a slave state. If so it would give slave-holding states the greater hand in the senate. To make things more equal they admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free new state. I believe this was sectionalism because Missouri wanted to allow slaves in their state and the United States had 11 slave states and 11 free states. Adding Missouri as a slave state would mess up the balance of power in Congress.
  • Harriet Tubman and her first escape

Harriet Tubman and her first escape

Harriet Tubman was a slave living in Maryland. In 1849 she decided to escaped. After that she led many more missions to free other slaves and was a main "conductor" on the Underground Railroad. These escapes and missions were acts of sectionalism because it made slave owners angry and more worried of more slaves escaping.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850

The Compromise of 1850 was made up of five parts. The act admitted California as a free state, passed the Fugitive Slave Law, creates a border between Texas and New Mexico, gave Utah and New Mexico popular sovereignty, and bans the slave trade in D.C. This was an act of sectionalism because it favored the northern region with an imbalance of 15 slave and 19 free states, resulting in both economical and political power.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    Fugitive Slave Law

This law stated that all slaves even freed slaves, had to be returned to their owners. This law made it harder on the government because they were in charge of finding and returning the slaves to their owners. This created conflict between southern states and northern states and was a law of sectionalism because people living in the northern states at the time were required to help find runaway slaves.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation

During the Civil War President Abraham Lincoln created a law that and freed all enslaved people. This law I believed is view as sectionalism because at the time most enslaved people worked for owners that lived in the south so when President Lincoln created the law, it rose conflict between both regions.
