Abolitionism was a movement where people wanted to abolish slavery. They copied Great Britain in tactics in abolishing their slavery in the 1830s. Many heated debates and violent skirmishes happened which ultimately led to the Civil War and the abolishment of slavery. This was very centered towards religious white people and free black people who had these movements. This was sectionalist because the south was very centered toward slavery.

Westward expansion was a period of time where many technological advances and land was gained. There was also a very popular belief that the U.S. should expand from coast to coast, this was called Manifest Destiny. Some land that was gained during westward expansion was the Treaty of Paris Lands, Louisiana Purchase, Texas Annexation, Mexican Cession, and Oregon territory. Westward expansion led to sectionalism because of technological advances such as the railroad which led to more slave usage.

The 3/5ths Compromise was an agreement in which 3/5ths of the slaves owned in a slave state are counted as population and taxation. This was because bigger states wanted the slaves to count as population because that meant more representatives. However, in free states they sought to also count these slaves as property tax. This led to nationalism because the south and the north agreed on a compromise, but it also made each side unhappy because they didn't really get what they wanted. -
The 10th Amendment basically said that powers not stated in the Constitution for the federal government are for it and other non-stated powers are for the states. Southern slave states thought that the federal government was too powerful and the states needed to have more power. The smaller states wanted more cash crops and cheap enslaved labor. This was very based on the south because the south wanted more slaves and so this amendment supported sectionalism. -
The Missouri Compromise was where we would admit Missouri as a slave state, but since admitting Missouri as a slave state would have an imbalance. So we would also admit Maine as a free state. The line to separate which states were free or not, this line was the 36°30’N line. States north of it would be free, and States south of the line had popular sovereignty or choice in which they would be a free or slave state. This led to sectionalism because it was more lenient towards free states. -
The Fugitive Slave Law stated that all slaves that had escaped were to be returned to their slave owners even if in a free state. This act was re-passed in 1850 because southerners thought that the Fugitive Slave law of 1793 was not enforced well enough. The new Act was much more brutal because if you were the enslaved person and you asked for a trial you would be sentenced a $1000 dollar fine and 6 months in jail. This law was sectionalist because this favored southern slave owners -
The Compromise consisted of 5 acts where California was admitted as a free state, Utah and New Mexico had popular sovereignty, the Fugitive Slave law was passed, slave trade ban, and Texas gets $10 Million. The Fugitive Slave law basically means slaves can't escape and hunters can track them down without law enforcement, and slave trade in Washington DC was banned for good. The compromise was fair to both sides of the country because California was free and it passed the Fugitive Slave Law. -
Secession was the withdrawal of the 11 southern slave states from the U.S. after the electing of Abraham Lincoln. Secession is what ultimately led to the civil war. The states included Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. This is sectionalism because the south is wanting to separate and they do separate. -
The Emancipation Proclamation states that all enslaved people currently in the United States were free as of January 1, 1863. That means Abraham Lincoln did not immediately free 4 million men and women. The Proclamation also only applied to people in the confederacy and not the states that remained loyal to the union. This was sectionalist because this favored the north who wanted to abolish slavery, however this was passed after the civil war.
