    Abolitionism was the movement in the United States that tried to destroy slavery. Between the 16th and 19th centuries 12 million enslaved Africans were forcibly transported to America. The brutality of slavery sparked a reaction that insisted on its abolition altogether. This relates to the civil war because it made the south mad, they would give back their laborers that help them get a bigger economy. This is sectionalism, the act of abolition is made to benefit the slaves.

    Westward Expansion

    Westward Expansion is the idea that our nation should manifest destiny. They would add new states but disrupt the balance of slave and free states. The Louisiana Purchase In 1803, the United States added territory known as Louisiana, which doubled their land. This relates to the civil war because it lead to more land being taken away in the Civil War. This is nationalism, the act of expanding west is trying to help the whole US with their economy and things.

    The 3/5th Compromise

    The 3/5th compromise was when the southern states had a bigger population and wanted the slaves to count towards their population for their representatives in Congress while the northern states said that if the slaves were treated like property then they should count towards their population and not representatives. This relates to the civil war because more land was taken away in the Civil War. Sectionalism the act of abolition is made to benefit the slaves.

    States' Rights were when many southerners felt that the federal government was getting too powerful by robbing them of their sovereignty. Cash crops required much labor so they used slaves to do their labor for free. There was an impact on the economy by them not having to force them to make laws that the government wanted them to make. They were allowed to make their own laws. This relates to the civil war because some people did not like this. Nationalism, the States Rights benefit everyone.

    The Underground Railroad

    The Underground Railroad was the resistance to enslavement through escape during the end of the Civil War. This refers to the efforts of slaves to gain their freedom by escaping their homes. Many freedom seekers began their journey with no help and many completed their self-emancipation like that, but years after more and more people were helping them escape. This relates to the civil war because some people did not like this. Sectionalism by putting fear and anger in the South because of them.

    Compromise of 1820/MO Compromise

    The Compromise of 1820 was when Missouri was trying to become a slave state it would disrupt the balance of 11 free slave states. Maine would admit itself as a free state to keep them balanced. Then all states north of the 36°30N line would be free states and all south would have popular sovereignty, when the citizens of a state decide for themselves on the issue of slavery. This relates to the civil war because some people did not like this. Nationalism, the Compromise of 1820 benefit everyone.

    The Compromise of 1850 was when CA was admitted as a free state. UT and NM were passed for popular sovereignty. The fugitive slave law was passed then DC banned the slave trade. The western region of America benefited from this. This relates to the civil war because some people did not like these new laws. Nationalism, the Compromise of 1850 tried to benefit everyone.

    The Fugitive Slave Law was part of The Compromise of 1850. This act required slaves to be returned to their owners, even if they were in a free state. It also required the government responsible for finding and trying the escaped slaves. This relates to the civil war because some people did not like this because they still wanted slaves. Nationalism, the Slave Law benefited mostly the slaves.

    The Emancipation Proclamation was made by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War which freed all enslaved people. This means that all slaves that had seceded from the United States, leaving slavery untouched in the loyal border states. Thankfully the rest of the slavery population was free. This sparked lots of other citizens to try to abolish slavery. This relates to the civil war because some people wanted slaves still. Nationalism, the EP benefited mostly the slaves by setting them free
