Abolitionism was the movement to abolish slavery. Abolitionists wanted to end the Atlantic Slave trade & liberate enslaved people. This connects to sectionalism because the free states wanted slavery to end but the slave states did not because the enslaved people counted towards their population. This relates to a Civil War because the free states were fighting for slavery to end while the slave states were fighting to keep slavery which may start a rivalry between the North and South.

Westward Expansion started in 1787 and ended in 1861 and was the widespread movement west. Westward Expansion started with the belief in Manifest Destiny. Westward Expansion connects with sectionalism because slave states wanted slavery to be allowed in the new Western territories while the free states did not. This relates to a Civil War because the South and North disagreed over whether the Western territories would permit enslavement or prohibit enslavement.

The 3/5 Compromise was an agreement made during the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The agreement stated that 3 out of 5 slaves would count toward the state's population. The 3/5 Compromise connects with sectionalism because the agreement was made so the slave states would have a bigger population & more representatives. This relates to a Civil War because the slave states would have more representatives than the free states. This might anger the free states because they have less of a say. -
The federal government cannot interfere with the state's power given to them in the 10th Amendment. This connects to sectionalism because the individual states want their power separate from the federal authority. This relates to a Civil War because the states now control their own power instead of the federal government controlling their power. This means that the states can use their authority however they want to abolish federal laws that they didn't support. -
Missouri was admitted into the U.S. as a slave state & Maine was admitted as a free state at the same time. States above the 36° 30' latitude line are free states and states below the line are slave states. This connects to nationalism because the Compromise was made to keep balance in the nation between slave and free states so that there weren't too many free states or too many slave states. -
California was entered into the Union as a free state. Mexican Cession was separated into New Mexico and Utah. A boundary between Texas and the U.S. was made. The Fugitive Slave Act was changed and slave trade was abolished. This connects to sectionalism because the Compromise of 1850 only benefitted the free states. This relates to a Civil War because tensions rose between the free states and slave states when California entered the U.S. as a free state. -
The Fugitive Slave Law stated that escaped slaves must be given back to their owners even if they were in a free state. The law also stated that the federal government must try escaped slaves in court. This connects to sectionalism because the Southern states wanted to make sure that the slave population did not decrease. This relates to a Civil War because the Southern states wanted the Northern states to follow the law & return their slaves to them but the Northern states did not listen. -
Secession was when eleven slave states in the South left the United States after Abraham Lincoln was elected. This connects to sectionalism because the 11 states that withdrew are only leaving to benefit their state. This relates to a Civil War because Secession caused the North and South to start battling and start The Civil War. -
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln. The Proclamation stated that all enslaved people in the Southern states must be free. This connects to nationalism because the Emancipation Proclamation ended the Civil War.
