Westward expansion is what led to sectionalism between the North and South because of the issue of the spread of slavery. The problem of slavery grew as states were added to the nation. This gradually led to the Civil War. Westward Expansion was a significant push towards the West coast of North America. It was started from the idea of Manifest Destiny which explains that our nation should expand from the Atlantic to Pacific coast.

The ⅗ Compromise is sectionalism. It is dividing landowners & the enslaved population. The southern states have large populations & wanted their enslaved population to count towards their states overall population. This would increase their representation. The Compromise was when delegates agree that ⅗ of the population would count towards population & taxation. The ⅗ Compromise disproportionately represented slave states, leading to the Civil War. -
The States Rights is nationalism because it is making sure that everyone has equal power in order to have a more successful, powerful nation. State's Rights states “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Southern states sought to overthrow federal laws to protect slave rights which led to the Civil War. -
The Underground Railroad was nationalism because it allowed so many enslaved people to be free & it eventually led to our nation freeing all slaves. This united the nation so that all people would be treated equally. The Underground Railroad was a network of people, both white and free Blacks, working together to help runaways from slaveholding states travel North and to Canada where slavery was illegal. The Underground Railroad was a direct cause of the Civil War.

The Compromise of 1820 is sectionalism because it supports the fact that the nation is split into two by adding one slave state & one free state. The Compromise of 1820 is when the U.S. admitted Missouri as a slave state & Maine as a free state, so they wouldn’t disrupt the balance of power between slave & free states in the nation. It also outlawed slavery above the 36º 30' latitude line in the remainder of the Louisiana Territory. The Compromise was unconstitutional, leading to the Civil War. -
The compromise of 1850 was when the U.S. added most of the land west of the LA Purchase. California was admitted as a free state, then popular sovereignty occurred in UT & NM. Next, the fugitive slave law was passed, then Texas received $10 million which ended the border dispute with NM. Finally D.C. banned slave trade. The Compromise of 1850 caused an imbalance between free & slave states, leading to sectionalism. The compromise pushed the nation against slavery, resulting in the Civil War. -
The Fugitive Slave Law is sectionalism because it forces people into jail if they refuse to admit a fugitive slave & it forces fugitive slaves in free states to be returned to their owners. This is dividing the slaves and the slave supporters. Anyone who wanted slaves to be caught, could tattle on them and the slave would be returned to their owner. The Civil War was a result of a dispute over how to deal with runaway slaves, leading to the conflict. -
The raid on Harpers Ferry caused division and sectionalism between Southerners and their thought that all Northerners were abolitionists. Harpers Ferry was when John Brown and his supporters left their farmhouse hide-out to Harpers Ferry, where they captured prominent citizens and seized the federal armory and arsenal. Brown's raid helped make any further accommodation between North and South nearly impossible and thus became an important factor of the Civil War. -
The Emancipation Proclamation is nationalism because it is uniting our nations people as one. When all the slaves are free, it is lifting the division between slave owners and slaves. Lincoln changed his mind and made abolition a goal of the Union, but the Emancipation Proclamation had little immediate effect on slavery and was ignored by the Confederate states. For many northerners, the Emancipation Proclamation turned the war into a fight for freedom.
