Abolitionism is the movement to abolish slavery and to end the Atlantic Slave Trade. The goal is to wipe slavery off the Earth. Abolitionists' saw slavery as an abomination & they sent petitions to congress & ran for political positions to end slavery. This is sectionalism bc abolitionists threatened to take away slavery from the south which would lead to war breaking out. This relates to Civil War because Abolitionists were against slavery while the south was for it, this caused civil war.

Westward expansion was the idea that our nation should expand from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast through Manifest Destiny. Pioneers moved westward and went on journeys to Oregon and California using lots of trails. As colonists and people moved west the territory increased largely, this eventually threatened the balance between slave states and free states. This connects to nationalism because as people are moving westward they are expanding the US in the interest of all Americans.

The Southern states had a larger population of slaves so they wanted more power in the House. The North argued that if enslaved people are considered property then they count towards taxation and not representation. Delegates came to an agreement that 3 of every 5 slaves would be counted when determining a state's population for legislative representation. This connects to nationalism because they are coming together and compromising as a nation on what they should do. -
The 10th amendment states that power not given to the U.S. by the Constitution should be given to the states. Numerous Southerners felt that the Federal government was becoming too powerful and robbing the states of their sovereignty. The economy was affected because cash crops required labor and used many enslaved people for cheap labor. This is sectional because the southerners think that there is too much power given to the Federal government and there should be powers given to the states. -
Admitting Missouri as a slave state would allow the slave holding states an advantage in the senate so the solution was to make Maine as a free state. When making states, the government decided that the states north of 36 30’N would be free and below would be slave. This relates to nationalism because there is an even amount of free states and slave states, creating peace between the north and south. This connects to Civil War bc the North and the South separated & tensions continued to increase. -
Between 1845 and 1848 the U.S added most of the land west because of the LA Purchase.
The 5 parts of the compromise were, California became a free state, the freedom to choose to be free or slave in Utah and New Mexico, D.C banned the slave trade, the fugitive slave laws were passed, Texas gained 10 million dollars and constructed a border with New Mexico. This caused sectionalism because the north gained more power in the senate since D.C. banned the slave trade. -
The Fugitive Slave Law was passed by congress that stated slaves must be returned or given back to their owners, including slaves that were in free states. The act held the federal government accountable for finding and returning escaped slaves. This connects to nationalism because the federal government is working together to make new rules and acts to keep the southern states happy. -
South Carolina was the first state that declared their independence from the U.S. and 10 other Southerns states followed immediately after. The southern states wanted to protect state rights and slavery because the U.S. threatened to take them away. The Civil War was caused by the secession because it officially divided the North and the South. This is sectionalism because the southern states were separating themselves from the U.S. -
During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln announced that all all 3.5 million slaves were to be set free. Slaves escaped their masters by fleeing to the union or escaping with federal troops, so they could be permanently free from the South. The proclamation also allowed slaves to join the armed services of the United States. This relates to sectionalism because the south did not want to give up slavery and they fought back.
