Abolitionism was a movement to end slavery. The Northern states, also known as the Union, were abolitionists that wanted to abolish slavery. The Union tried passing numerous legislations to try and abolish slavery in the U.S. This is nationalism because abolitionism was a movement to end slavery not just across the North or South but to completely remove slavery throughout the U.S.

Westward expansion is the period of American history when the U.S. expanded its territory westward, acquiring new lands and increasing power. This expansion had started because of the desire for more land, access to resources such as gold and timber, and the belief in manifest destiny. Westward expansion had been nationalism because it lead to economic growth and prosperity, which helped to strengthen the nation's economy and create a sense of shared identity and purpose.

The Three-Fifths Compromise was reached among state delegates during the 1787 Constitutional Convention. It determined that three out of every five slaves was counted when determining a state’s total population for legislative representation and taxation. This relates to sectionalism because of how unfair the Union thought the Southern States were being because of how many states they had, so the Union passed a law where some slaves votes counted. -
States Rights came from Amendment 10 and Amendment 10 had prevented the government from being too powerful. If a power is not stated in the constitution, then it belongs to the states or the people. This relates to nationalism because the states did not want a controlling government, so the states came together and thought of a plan that would benefit all of the states. -
The Underground Railroad was a secret organization, both whites and free Blacks from the North, that worked together to help slaves run from the Southern states and travel to the North and Canada, where slavery was illegal. Usually, slaves ran away in the dark because of how hard it was to see brown skin in the night sky. This is Sectionalism because an organization helped slaves in the South to escape to the North to be free.

The Missouri Compromise had settled the issue of the states reach of slavery within the Louisiana Purchase territories by prohibiting slavery in states north of 36°30′ latitude.The Union had wanted to balance out the amount of Slave states and free states. This is nationalism because the Union didn't want the idea of slavery to spread to the Northern States. -
The Compromise of 1850 allowed slavery in Washington D.C., California had been added as a free state, Utah and New Mexico could now decide if they wanted to be free or slave, Texas claimed its boundary between New Mexico, the Fugitive Slave Act was passed which meant that all runaway slaves could be brought back to their owners for a bounty, lastly slave trade was banned. The Compromise of 1850 was sectionalism because it is the decision of certain states and if they wanted to be free or slave. -
The Dred Scott Decision was when a slave named Dred Scott had escaped from his owner and had gone to the North to be free, but his owner wanted him back, so Scotts owner, Sandford held a court case against Scott. The Case was called Dred Scott v. Sandford. This is sectionalism because, it allowed African Americans to have a voice in court. -
The Emancipation Proclamation was a legislation passed by Abraham Lincoln, and it freed all slaves that were apart of the Confederacy, but not the Union. Around 3.5 million slaves had been set free by the Emancipation Proclamation. This is Sectionalism because when Abraham Lincoln passed this legislation, he targeted the Confederacy to release all of their slaves.
