Idea that our nation should expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast was to manifest destiny. The addition of new territory and states threatened to disrupt the balance of power between slave and free states.

Northern states and southern states are arguing on slaves and if they count as part of the pop or if they count as tax and property. They end up agreeing on slaves being part of the pop but only 3 out of every five is apart of the pop but slaves also had tax because they were property. Slave trade was banned in the process of all of this. -
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the people. People can have any right that the states and government don't have. Government cant take rights away from the people either. -
The underground railroad helped hundreds of people from before and during the civil war. The railroad was very organized and had rules, and anyone and everyone could be apart of it regardless of race, actions and genders. The people who worked in the underground railroad were called freedom seekers and they were everywhere and in multiple countries.

Harriet Tubman started her life as a fugitive in 1849 running away from her owners after she heard that she was going to be sold to someone new. Her first transportation through the railroad was with her two brothers although the first attempt was a fail the second worked and they got out. After going to Philadelphia she realized how the rest of her family were still enslaved so she went to go and get them out from being enslaved.

America couldn't let Missouri be a slave state because it would throw off the balance between slave states and free states. America had to let Maine be a free state. The next problem though was the rest of the Louisiana purchase so to fix the whole problem the compromise line was made on 36, 30 N states north of the line were free but states under it can still be slave states. -
More land was added on the west side of the Louisiana purchase. Receives 10 million $ and makes new boarders with Mexico. Southerners thought the government had to much power. -
In 1854 Senator Douglas introduced a bill for organizing a vast territory with or without slavery as for their constitutions known as popular sovereignty. However, southern senators led by Missouri's David Atchison, who wanted to get rid of the 1820 line, were not satisfied with it. Douglas, who saw the railroad as the onward march of civilization, agreed to their demands and incorporated it into his bill, which made the debate over the Nebraska bill all about slavery. -
The proclamation said that all people who are slaves must be freed and will always be free and any slaves who are bought after this must be freed as well. Although it did not end slavery across the nation although it gave millions of people hope that slaves will finally be freed. This proclamation started the civil war because American troops were deployed to go and fight against the southern states.
