Abolitionism was the movement to end slavery. It sought to end the slave trade and liberate the enslaved people. This was sectionalism because abolitionism only sought to free the slaves with the North and did not think about the Southerners who needed the slaves for cash crops. It relates to Civil War because it was one side of the two views in the Civil War, Abolitionism, and proslavery.

Westward Expansion was the addition of new territories and states based on the idea of Manifest destiny which was where Americans believed it was their destiny to move Westward by the name of God. This was Nationalism because the addition of new territories benefited the entire nation. The new land helped America have a territorial advantage over other nations. The South wanted slaves to be in their total population so that they would have more representatives in the House and have more say. The North argued if enslaved people were property, then they should be taxed. The ⅗ Compromise said that ⅗ of the southern population would count towards both population and taxation. This was Sectionalism because it gave the South more say than the North. This led to Civil War because it made the North and South argue about slavery and the South left the US. -
Some of the Southern states felt that the federal government was getting too powerful and didn’t give the Southern states enough power. They said that as slavery was getting outlawed, it hurt their economy. Slavery provided free and cheap labor for their Cash Crop economy. Without slavery, it hurt their economy. This was sectionalism because the South wanted only to benefit their economy. This led to Civil War because the South said that they wanted Slavery while the North tried to abolish it. -
MO was going to become a slave state, but that would give slave states a majority in the Senate, so it was admitted but with ME as a free state. There was still the rest of the LA Purchase, so the Compromise Line: 36°30’N, which declared Northern states free and Southern states to be by popular sovereignty, was drawn. This is sectionalism because the line deemed more states free than slave which was unfair to the pro-slavery South. The South was unhappy with this which led to Civil War. -
CA was admitted as a free state, while there was popular sovereignty in UT and NM. The Fugitive Slave Law was passed, and DC banned slave trade. Texas received $10 million to create a border with NM. This was sectionalism because the south still had slavery because they still had their current slaves. They also got their slaves back because of the Fugitive Slave Law, while the North didn't get anything. The North was angry with this which caused tensions to rise leading to Civil War. -
The Missouri Compromise was dropped, KS and NE territories were created, and popular sovereignty was allowed. “Bleeding Kansas” happened, when proslavery and antislavery supporters went to KS and NE to try to change the vote. The Whig Party was destroyed and the Republican Party was created. The removal of the Compromise Line and use of popular sovereignty favored the South which was sectionalism. Bleeding Kansas was fought between the North and South, leading to Civil War, a North vs. South War -
Secession was when slave states withdrew from the Union after the election of Abraham Lincoln as president. This was Sectionalism because it only benefited the South. It gave the South what it wanted by allowing them to have slavery. Secession caused the Civil War because it was the way the South declared war against the North. -
This declared that all of the slaves in the Southern states were to be free. This only applied to states that had seceded from the United States. It also exempted parts of slavery and announced the acceptance of black men into the Union Army and Navy. This was Sectionalism because the South did not get what it wanted at all, while the North achieved its goal of getting rid of slavery. This was during the Civil War and led to continued tension during it because the South was angry.
