A Nation Divided

  • Period: to

    Westward Expansion

Westward expansion was that if Manifest Destiny expanded from the Atlantic to Pacific coast. This idea added new land to the United States. However, the ratio between slave states and free states was no longer balanced because with more states coming into the U.S, the power in Senate was not going to be equal. Nationalism was occurring because all of the states in the U.S were coming together to admit new states into the union, even though the slave state to free state ration would not be equal.
  • 3/5 Compromise

    3/5 Compromise

The 3/5 Compromise was the outcome for when the Southern states wanted enslaved people to count for total state population, while the Northern states wanted the enslaved people to count as property. The Southerners argued that if the slaves were property, they needed to be taxed like the other properties. Sectionalism occurs here because the North and South states are only thinking of themselves when suggesting if enslaved people should be considered as part of the population or as property.
  • Amendment 10

    Amendment 10

The 10th commandment was created because the southerners felt like the federal government had too much power. They felt as if the government was taking away the states' power. There was a major impact on economy because of this. Most of the cash crops required lots of manual work and labor, so the southerners would hire enslaved people. They would pay them little to nothing. This shows sectionalism in the United States because the south only wanted what was best for them.

    The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was a secret, underground transporting method which ended up freeing thousands of slaves. The railroad was established by a group of abolitionists who wanted the entire country to be free. One of those people was Harriet Tubman, who lead 13 missions and freed around 70 slaves. This was a sign of sectionalism because the slaves were only thinking of themselves and what was best for them, even though it was what was best for them and the entire United States.
  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise

The Missouri Compromise handled Missouri joining the United States as a slave state. However, the slave states would have had a majority in the Senate. As a result, Missouri was admitted into the United States as a slave state, and Maine was admitted into the United States as a free state. Nationalism occurred here because the United States acted as one when admitting another two states to make sure that no one would fight with each other over who has a bigger role in the Senate.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850

The majority of land west of the Louisiana Purchase was purchased between 1845-1848. Out of the lots of changes from this Compromise, California being admitted to the U.S as a free state was one of the major ones. This was very important because it balanced out the free state to slave state ratio. D.C Slave Trade was also banned as a hope for abolishing slavery. This shows signs of nationalism in the U.S because the U.S was not thinking of themselves when getting rid of slaves.
  • The Fugitive Slave Law

    The Fugitive Slave Law

The Fugitive Slave Law was the law that required the U.S citizens to return slaves if they found out the slaves had escaped from their owners. If the slaves were found in a free state, then the slaves would still have to be returned to their owner in the South. This also held the Federal government accountable for finding and returning escaped slaves. This shows sectionalism in the US because the South was only thinking of themselves when saying that their slaves needed to be returned to them.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was put into place after the proslavery and antislavery activists fled into the street of Kansas and Nebraska to attempt to sway the U.S citizens votes for whichever way they supported. The act separated the territory of Nebraska to try to stop the corruption between the citizens. This shows signs of sectionalism throughout the U.S because the activists only cared about what they felt about slavery instead of seeing which one made a better impact on the U.S.
  • Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry

The Harper's Ferry incident of 1862 was when a group of abolitionists who had guns attacked the government's armory. An armory is a place where weapons are kept. The armory was located in Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Lots of people like to think that it was one of the main reasons for the Civil War. This shows signs of sectionalism in the U.S because the people who were attacking the armory were only thinking of themselves and how their lives would be affected instead of the rest of the U.S.
