Westward expansion began because of the belief of manifest destiny, meaning that they thought god wanted them to, and gave them the right to, control all of the US. This is nationalism because it is not only adding new states, but also adding onto the country as a whole. This could lead to The Civil War because the new states could cause events to happen and create drama throughout the US.

The ⅗th Compromise’s purpose was to try & fix a conflict between the slave states & the free states. Southern states wanted their big number of enslaved people to count towards their overall state population so they could have more representation, & the Northern states wanted slaves to count towards taxation. The end decision was that ⅗ enslaved people would count towards population & taxation. This is sectionalism because it is two parts of the US divided & having different desires & opinions. -
The state rights were 10 amendments in the Bill of Rights. There were 10 rules, telling people what they could and couldn’t do. This is nationalism because it is not specific to one state or region. This could lead to The Civil War because the reason for the revolutionary war was the rules the king had set. -
The main conflict was that Missouri’s admission would ruin the balance between slave & free states by giving slave states the upper hand in the Senate. Maine was added as a free state to balance the slave & free states. The problem was that the rest of the Louisiana purchase would have to be sorted. The solution was making states under the compromise line slave states, & states above free states. This is nationalism because the U.S. was trying to make a compromise for the whole country. -
The purpose was to fix the US when the rest of the LP territory was added, along with the west part of the US. The solution was that CA was made a free state, there was Popular Sovereignty UT territory & NM territory, the Fugitive Slave Law was passed, the DC Slave Trade was banned, & Texas got $10,000,000 to end the border debate with NM. The North benefited the most because they now had more control in the Senate. This is nationalism because the government attempted to make everyone content. -
The act created two territories: the UT territory & the NM territory. In this act, the UT & the NM territory went against the Compromise of 1820 because both territories had popular sovereignty, which led to “Bleeding Kansas”.Bleeding Kansas was when people from the free states traveled to the territories under popular sovereignty to influence the majority vote. This is nationalism because the government was trying to make a solution for everyone to be happy, though it did not turn out that way. -
John Brown was an abolitionist who was very towards the idea of getting rid of slavery, including the institute of slavery. He was very violent and murdered one slave owner just for the reward of 11 people becoming free. He was born into abolitionism. He is showing sectionalism because he is siding with one group of people, and this leads to the civil war because the separation creates more tension between the two groups. -
Secession caused the civil war. What happened was that 11 of the slave states separated themselves from the rest of the US. This is sectionalism because it is the slave states looking out for themselves to keep their state rights and to keep slavery within their states. This is connected to the Civil War because it caused disagreement between the US. -
This proclamation was made by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. It stated that all enslaved people would be free, ending slavery in the US. This is sectionalism because the slave states most likely were not keen on the idea of abolishing slavery and it just increased tensions.
